  1. Sounds like driving in my neighborhood. That's why I drive defensively, always looking for a way of escape, always prepared to give way even if according to the law I have right of way. No entitlement here. I value life, my own and others.

  2. I thought it's a rule of the sea that smaller vessels yield to large ones? So why is it cargo ships fault for the collision?

  3. In 1958, I was in the Naval Hospital on Long Island, NY for minor surgery. I was just learning to drive the family car, also. I met Gen. McArthur's driver. The one piece of advice he told me, that I remember, was to always have an escape route. I'm 83 now, still driving, and still scan for a safe way out…

  4. It is why channel 16 needs to monitored and used as if he called to cargo vessel and got no response then he would have been able to make a decision on how to avoid a collision, irrespective of who had right of way.

  5. A Turkish guy named his boat "Grey Wolf"? And then mysteriously died at sea? Did you know, that in Turkey , there is a far right violent acting group called Grey Wolfes? In Germany, for instance they are considered a terrorist group and forbidden, as they attack and harm people with left or liberal thinking or activities. What kind of guy in Turkey would you be, when you name your pleasure boat like this?????

  6. Both cargo ship and 12m (not that big) yacht should have been keeping a lookout but even if they weren't AIS should have triggered, impressed that they found a body 90m down that's really hard. Absolutely complete negligence to not maintain a lookout on a cargo ship, seriously negligent not to make a mayday (or Mayday relay) after colliding with another vessel.

  7. The World's Oceans and Waterways are Filled with Massive Ships that have Severely Incompetent Captains and Crews that are Causing Disasters Throughout the World, and it's Blatantly Obvious That Nothing is being done to Change the Disastrous Course The Shipping Industry is on as it continues to get Worse by the Day, Week, Month and Year.

  8. Wait a min.
Hitting a boat and not reporting it is
Terrible and of Course their should be Consequences.

But is it illegal to use Autopilot on a Ship ??
IS It Illegal to have a BBQ on a Ship ??

Sounds to Me that at The Most the
Captain and 1st Officer are Guilty of Not Reporting the Crash.

    What am I missing???

You can make almost anything sound horrible just by the Words you use AND how the message is Conveyed.

  9. As owner of a 36" sailboat operating in San Francisco Bay around cargo vessels of all sizes, not to mention fishing and motor yachts, it's not at ALL uncommon for there to be inattentive helmsman, especially among the motor yachts. We smaller boats also must give way to larger vessels for maneuverability reasons. The empty helm is criminal, but an inattentive small boat operator bears more responsibility here.

  10. No excuse for the ship not having someone watching at the helm. That being said I watch a lot of these small sailing yacht people video here on YouTube I mean they go down and go to bed for three hours I just let the boat steer itself I know when there’s just one person on a boat I guess you do that but even when it’s two people they just go down below hang out read listen to music I can’t believe what a big chance they take. I worked on Ships before leisurely should never take for granted that somebody’s watching out at all times in fact I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

  11. ummmm. long ago I learned the law of tonnage. Regardless of rules of the road, it's the smaller vessels responsibility to get out of the away. There would have been radio traffic if the Hallad was in distress and had a loss of propulsion or steering.

  12. I was in the Coast Guard. We crossed in front of a big ship in a 30 foot boat on a rescue. The thing was flying; scared us it was a close call. Our fault, but it’s difficult to judge speed when something is coming sty at you.

  13. COLREGS, Several rules show the obligations to avoid risk of collision, the main point of the rules, e.g. outlook by all involved and also radar plotting. No mention of any difference between large and small vessels. Only rule 7 mentions very large ships for the reason if you go by the bearing on the bow of the long ship to avoid a collision you might collide with the stern, but not the non existing and wrongly quoted “small gives way to big”. It is good seamanship to evaluate the manoeuvrability of a large cargo ship which would have been visible from a longer distance, assuming good visibility at the time. It would appear both parties neglected the obligations.

  14. What was mr yuckai doing before the collision? Normally the smaller vessel moves out of the was, because it’s more manoeuvrable. Very sad news. Condolences to his family and friends.
