#Catamaran #Sailing #OutboardMotors #MarineElectronics #BoatingTips #DIYBoat #CruisingCatamaran #SailingLife #OutboardVsInboard #BoatReview Our contact: reversing.ntropy@gmail.com #SailboatCruising #SailingLife #LiveAboard #SailingTips #BoatLife #CruisingSailboat #BeginnerAiling #sailingAdventures #yachting #OceanLife

The issue has always been the fumes from gasoline are combustible… Isolate and ventilate outside of the boat and you should be okay
From a designer and builder of sailing catamarans I was interested in this video to see some one talking about the pros and cons O/boards Vs diesels yes i can see both sides of this however from my 45 years in this industry i can tell you, Inboard S/D diesels win over every time. Two main undisputable factors 1. reliable engines are paramount and here diesels are choice 2 . outboards need to have enough HP to be compatable with the size and displacement of the catamaran so using 12-15 Hp outboards is under powering this vessel and when you need the power it not there and can lead to difficult situations. if you go bigger there is a space and weight and extra engineering for the attachment plates is also an issue and need a hydrolic ram to lift the engine clear of the water.
These are more safty factors and operational issues and must top the list when deciding on power plants.
I appriciate that there are many O/B powered cats out there and stories that there is and has been no problems with them .
Having built catamarans for customers with both power options, over all its in my opinion diesels are more common for a reason and that is reliablility and safty.
Great idea put on diesal outboard ….A put two of them….B..just an other plus.. C ..missed it let you know
You can use an inboard for water heating, use it as a generator, diesel is far safer, diesel is more efficient, no engine falling off. Who wants hundreds or thousands of litres of pterol on board.
this is what i have been dream up lately the diseal suc break u can replace them cheap the out boards less holes in cat iit is smart then u just have gen
Diesel Outboard Motors (New OR Secondhand)
OXE Diesel – 50hp, 125 hp, 150hp, 175hp, 200hp & 300hp
Mercury – 175hp
Neander Marine – 50hp
Yanmar (No Longer Made) 18hp, 27hp, 36hp, 40hp,
50hp (this is model only made )
Volvo Penta (No Longer Made) 2.5hp, 3.9hp, 5 hp, 9hp, 14hp, 20hp, 35hp, 45hp, 55hp, 60hp, 70hp, 75hp, 90hp
We had an Endeavour Cat 30 which had a 40hp Yamaha outboard attached to a hydraulic lowering transom at the back of the cockpit. The leg was much further forward then the cat shown in the video so the prop didn't pop out of the water unless it was extremely rough water. Had planned to fit two smaller 20hp units to the transom before we ended up selling her
From personal experience on my trimaran with an outboard on it and my fathers monohull with an inboard, I find the outboard to b nicer on many aspects
I have a 64 foot catamaran and I switched the engines to outboards….it was a great decision…super happy….2 mercurys 115 hp each….plenty of pour…
Apparently you can get a diesel outboard if you want the best of both worlds. For me, petrol engine vs diesel engine is about ease of repair, but only if the petrol engine is analogue. Otherwise, both use injectors (a pain to repair and replace) and on petrol engines you probably have electronic ignition which is replace over repair. Thanks for the video.
Good video!
Here's a solution to most of your problems you describe with outboards.. it's diesel, and it has a generator to charge your onboard systems. If you're running one of these on a cat. You actually would have two of them so you have redundant power. Now things just got a whole lot better instead of adding complications. You still don't get the hot water benefit, but it solves the lifespan problem and it gives you power redundancy.

38 ft is not big
On our Chawk pilothouse we ran our 1996 mercury 150hp carbureted 2-stroke for 29 years without one single breakdown
I have 3 problems with them, range, cavitation and explosive fuel.
Just buy a diesel outboard ,,, yes they make them.
My ex father in law did this 20 yrs ago on a 48' ply glass cat he built in Hawaii. The outboards were center mounted to a swing arm type of platform. Worked like a dream…
Just looking at a diesel engine down in the bowels of a hull makes me want to gag.
Let’s say your propeller gets caught in a fishing line or rope from a crab trap and you’re by yourself…simply push a button and your propeller is out of the water and you cut the line off in a few minutes and carry on…only with an outboard engine is this possible.
Thankyou 😊😊😊
Just utilize diesel outboards instead of gasoline.
Not necessarily for catamarans, but in general, here in the PNW outboards tend to be preferred to inboards. Easier corrosion maintenance, redundancy, ease of replacement. The pros outweigh the cons if you can size your motors properly to the task. Not sure where that dropoff would be for a cat… guess you could keep adding motors. haha.
I have a 30 ft maine cat with outboards, it's beautiful
Own a MaineCat 30 with two Tohatsu 9.9FI outboards. Perfect? No. But way, way, way better than dealing with diesels. I understand that once the cat gets up to 40+ ft outboards may not be practical. But for small, light multihulls they are excellent.
I see Yanmar has a 40hp diesel outboard. I wonder how that would be. I'm a little concerned about a big tank of gasoline offshore. Guess I would need a genset as well.
I've seen twin outboards on power cats ever since I've paid attention to boats. But watching Tim Weston build his here on youtube was the first time I'd seen a sailing cat with them. Lowered down on platforms on the inside of either hull. Kind of blew my mind. Then I discussed it with friends, who in turn pretty much decided I was a nutjob. Mounted further forward could also mitigate coming out of the water. But I like the idea alot.
