1. Changing Yabá’s rigging to gaff has been one of the MOST requested upgrades from you all!
    WE ARE FINALLY DOING IT!
Now tell us what do you think about this change? We love hearing your thoughts!

  2. I’ve been sailing oceans for over 40 years, on all types of boats, and have designed and built a couple of very fast sailboats. A gaff rig is a good style match for your ship, but it’s definitely heavy to handle. The top boom is heavy and a big sail area is heavy. For cruising you want to split the sail area into several smaller sails.

If you want to have more sail area between the masts, leave the staysail style you got now, and then put an inverted version of it on the jib mast. It can have a wishbone boom. That also looks good on a classic schooner. The sails between the masts are the ones you’ll mostly use in heavy weather, as they keep the boat relatively balanced, even if all others are down. You can sail upwind in pretty heavy weather with them. If that’s a gaff sail, you can forget this option. Gaff sails are shit upwind.

Make the aft sail a gaff sail for light winds, just for show. Its weight and area means you won’t use it much, but it looks nice. Getting rid of the furlers and rather using hooks so the sail can be lowered, is a great choice. A good furler that is well maintained works well, but it’s still a vulnerable system, and totally useless for reefing. (Sailmakers love seeing roller reefed headsails. It means they get customers soon. Ask any sailmaker…) Hooks are brilliantly simple and always works. They can have slab reefs, which leaves a sail with good shape, efficient upwind in a blow.

For sail construction: Use radial panels, not classic horizontal panels. Keeps the shape way better for much longer, and is stronger for the same cloth weight. For cloth, choose Hydranet or similar. It has partial Dyneema fibre cloth. It’s more expensive, but keeps the shape many years more. The best and cheapest in the long run. Do NOT use classic Dacron. It’s shit within a few weeks. It doesn’t tear immediately, but the shape is destroyed. Poor sail shape = uncomfortable and unsafe boat, that cannot sail upwind when you really need to.

A lot of sailors swear by Dacron. The same people who swear by CQR anchors. Couch sailors. Don’t listen to people who think old = good. WIth sailcloth and anchors that is just flat out WRONG. A gaff rig is the same type of thing, of course, old fashioned and outdated with poor functionality, but as long as the essential sails are better, it’s ok to go for a bit of classic styling to match the boat.

  3. Ben if you are going to use a pro sailmaker to build your sails and change your rig then he should do all the measuring for you and maybe the rig design as well.

  4. A gaf rig will keep you fit just remember to reduce sail area befor it is essential have you thought of gaf just for the main it may be your best alternative espesially on a long voige and at night

  5. It will be a magnificent sailing and great to watch. Meaning that you have to make two new upper booms, one for each mast. This will make the yacht Yabá to sail faster. My grandfather was a sailor and a boat builder and I followed his work when I was old enough t ounderstand (around 6 years old) – I wish you both good luck with the project and I also wish you a Merry Christmas. Here in Norway the snow have already arrived and it is freezing cold. Mest wishes from Bengt Sandgren (73 year old retired officer from the Army)⛄🎄

  6. Just tjougjt i would add my 2 cents…
Never watching you do i feel envy but gratitude for living the life i cant……loving the journey still cant believe we here after all thats transpired it honestly feels like yesterday you relaunched forget the very beqgining……

  7. Get the calcs done properly and get the rig designed by an expert. Consider Bermudan rig , Gaff rig is not the easiest to reef either , or indeed to manage in general short handed . With the right mast height calculated a decently cut Genoa (compared to the very bellied sails you have now ) will still be a very important sail that conributes a lot to the overall drive of the rig and the headsails in general an important part of managing the rig for different weather conditions.

  8. MO & Ben,
What an episode 👍👍You guys rock, I love Yaba and this is coming from someone that is also susceptible of a wooden boat!! This boat is amazing and the effort and perseverance you both put into her is outstanding 👍👍
She is looking more beautiful every time I see her. I would love to see her in Ireland sometime in the future 👍👍❤️❤️🇮🇪🇮🇪

  9. A gaff rig will be heavier but you will gain more sail area with more control. Can I recommend, as an old sail maker, give your sail maker your max measurements and let them make the deductions. You can also make adjustments but you will get the maximum sail area for each sail. Really looking forward to the new configuration. Cheers

  10. Friends. you gave up so much heart and soul in rebuilding that dream (I've watched). The sails sucked. I'm not experienced in the art/science of sails, but spent a lot of time developing textiles for them (I'm a textile engineer). You've made the correct choice and you'll see the difference.

  11. If you can do it? You might want to get an electric motor for yaba to have as an alternative to your gas motor in order to save fuel on long journeys and for when the weather won’t cooperate!

  12. I'm sorry. I like the style of your sails now. It makes Yaba look romantic sailing with all 4 open in a drone shot. She looks different than most other boats. While I know you're excited for the new ones. You said more work so at 76 I find that hard to justify. I'm with MJ on this one.
