I would suggest that people who want to take this course check the prerequisites for access to this course with the sailing school. Firstly you do not need your Day Skipper theory, per-se, but you do need to have the theoretical knowledge to that level. The other relates to practical. You should have completed your Competent Crew course or be at competent crew level prior to attending a Day Skipper practical course. Schools will set out criteria such as 100 miles 5 days on boat etc. There is not enough time on a Day Skipper practical course to teach students crew skills. Day skipper practical is not a beginner or entry level course and you are unlikely to achieve the required level of proficiency as a Day Skipper if you blag your way onto the boat without previous experience. Further in regard to tips. If the course is being run correctly by a credible school all aspects of your theory should be tested in a practical environment opposed to a desk. Massive difference between plotting a three point fix at a desk than there is going down below and doing it on a moving boat. So revise your theory prior to attendance in particular IRPCS, lights and shapes. Lastly contrary to miscommunication on You Tube and Social media. This is not an attendance course. You do have to achieve and demonstrate a required level of proficiency in given skills. If you can’t demonstrate these levels you will not be awarded your certificate. My last tip would be. Do not book your charter until you have passed your course. Too many people think it’s an attendance course and think regardless of their effort they will be given a certificate. This is partly due to the wrong advice being given. If you want the right advice go to the RYA website and talk to RYA sailing schools.
