The Take-Homes: 1. 1. Great video, my brother 🙂 Keep on keeping people safe. Thank you for the shoutout! I love that outro song. (ps – just for the record, I wouldn't consider a Bavaria a bluewater boat. We rescued three sailors off of a dismasted 44… they're a bit lightly build, IMHO). Much love!

  2. I believe James , of Be the captain , once delivered a Bavaria and almost sunk, said he'd never again sail a Bavaria . Lots of errors here surprising for so called seasoned sailors , like stowing the anchor, no drogue , hatches open …

  3. I agree. Bavaria is a medium/ low cost coastal cruiser. Just look up the sailing specifications and it does not hit the numbers. It is also broad beamed round upper works with flat bottom. Made to sell not sail off shore. In addition , why didn’t they head further off shore to get away from short steep waves. Then heave too or use a sea anchor. Seems they remained beam to the seas. Not smart. They also could have gone into a protected bay. Head into the waves w motor to secure the anchor and put our full rode. Those big windows are a clue that it is not a blue water boat. This video intends well but misses the mark. Use a better example if you want to point out that a blue water Yatch is not a guarantee. 1:35

  4. Oh, man. Great break down: short, and to the point. ( And ugh 😔 – bloody touchscreens – and all the other "hip, trendy tech bs" ) ( 😔🙏 …. )

  5. Title is such BS. "Blue water boats" is a category that is wide open to interpretation and covers so many different types sizes and ages of boat that such a generalisation is basically pure click bait. Very very rarely does the loss of a boat come down to just the design, or even mostly the design. Most of the time it's the human factor, level of training and experience of crew. Another big part of the human factor is peoples attitude to risk, and that in turn is often heavily influenced by budget. Upgrade the boat or sail, upgrade the safety equipment or sail. Overhaul the engine or sail. Renew the rigging or sail. Have the liferaft serviced or sail. The list goes on and on and on. And then there's whether or not crew practice for the worst. How many times have you seen people pull the cord on an expired liferaft on land on YT for clicks instead of using the opportunity to practice an evacuation – preferably outside the marina with some swell running

  6. Sorry Bavarias are NOT sturdy boats.
They are built with a constant cost control in mind, with minimal materials to stand a blow, and average cruising equipment and rigging designed for 99% of what the market demands : holiday summer cruising. This is quite clear with the portholes/windows shown in the video : I wouldn't crew for a long passage without asking to device a system more protective (such as I put on my own boat). Experienced skipper and thousands of miles behind the belt are sure important, but equipment has to be conceived and built with the former personal experience and ALSO other experiences.

What you describe here is a loosely preparation of the boat in a gale. Keeping anchor and chain inside is not stupid : you centre all the heavy weight in the lower part of the boat at the center. It may help the boat to remain level and not be unbalanced when conditions are extreme.
But the loss of the lifeboat is unforgivable : it should be lashed strongly with a quick release contraption :: it easy to find the right one and to install. This must be checked repeatedly and as soon a wind pipes up it should be relashed if possible.
Window beaking is unforgivable : I would never embark fo a several day cruising with holes in the weather prediction with thus portholes / windows : this is a show of very bad seamanship.
And again the front hatches left open during the storm leaves us wondering : if there is not someone with a clear head who can close the hatch as soon as the wind pipes up, the owners and the crew should be declared unable to cruise sailing. Period! This is almost ridicule…
Sailors without a knife permanently attached to their pocket… are not sailors, as simple as that!

  7. I will absolutely watch the rest of this vid, and comment more, but for starters, a fin keel yacht, especially a Bavaria, with a spade rudder is absolutely NOT a bluewater sailboat. So staring there I’m interested to see where this is going.

  8. Bay of Islands is my home port. Shelter off Russell can be achieved in any conditions with a maximum fetch of about 5 miles. Sure in a strong blow that translates to chop height of about 1.5m.

  9. I agree, this was not a blue water ready boat. I would go as far as saying no production boat is blue water ready as they come out of the factory. Most will need significant upgrades to all the essential systems and many will need reinforcement to some structures like windows and hatches. Point I would note in this instance given that the wind
    was close to hurricane strength.
Why was the Bimini still up? All canvas should have been taken off
Why did they think the anchor needed to be stowed below, didn't they trust the bow storage, were there no chocks on deck
Why was the main nav station instrumentation in the cockpit not at the nav station
Did they have high volume, 3,000gal plus, bilge pumps
A cover board with a strong back that can be fitted quickly without tools is essential if you must go to sea with a boat that has windows not portholes.
Why did they continue to reach in conditions the boat obviously could not cope with rather than hove too

  10. Valid conclusion. Invalid example. As many have noted, there is nothing blue water about a Bavaria, other than maybe the treated water in the head.
Not sure about the 46 but I believe Bavaria even went through a period of chopper gun structural laminates.
Additional point – while this doesn't illustrate anything about blue water boats it does illustrate the insane trend in new boats of making them more window than hull/deck.
Keeping water out is taking second place to letting light in.

  11. Sorry but that captain was at fault. The likelihood of being knocked down reaching in 60+ knots is a guarantee not a chance. The first knock down or two… was god almighty giving them a freebie, a warning of a far more unforgiving knock down. Ive done that trip, in 60knots and the breaking waves off 6m swells are amazing, but utter madness to reach across them. Its lucky they all didn't die imho. As captain you do have to think one or two steps ahead. And always challenge "seatime" Is it racing in the Hauraki gulf, a lifetime of cruising through the rough stuff every now and again or stew on a cruise liner!!. All three will be accredited but only one – maybe – has the right skills to captain an offshore storm.

  12. I used to sail in the 70s mainly Nicholson boats at 77 I now have a diesel duck but walking around the marina lately I would say 75% of the sailing boats would not have been considered sea worthy for ocean voyages !

  13. I started telling Youtube to "Never recommend channel" on just about every YouTube Channel I used to watch. I am pretty sure I would have never found this channel otherwise. 🙂

  14. Excellent analysis and discussion of this tragedy. I struggle with liferaft stowage. Dont like topside by example the fate of the Essences rsft. Currently, I keep it in the salon on the deck, but, could I get it on deck and midship in time? My best solution is to periodically practice hauling it up under sail, in the middle of the night and in bad weather.

  15. It's a well known fact that boats built before 1980 are both stronger and more seaworthy. Additionally, it's only after 10 years that fibre glass reaches full strength and is unlikely to get osmosis after that.

  16. Bavaria does not make blue water boats. Bavarias are known to be lightly constructed and do not possess no blue water characteristics whatsoever. Apparently you have no idea whatsoever what you are talking about. Today’s production boats are even worse, they are for lakes and are functional for five years only.

  17. Cut the guy some slack, the way the Youtube algorithm works all but forces you to whore yourself out via a controversial and/or dramtic clickbait title. He raises some valid points that might have never been heard without the clickbait.
