  1. We designed and programmed this control system ourselves for our solar electric yacht.

This isn’t a product demo or a sales pitch — it’s a walkthrough of the design decisions behind the system, how we manage complexity, and why safety and redundancy mattered enough to shape the architecture.

If you’re curious about electric boats, marine systems, or how modern yachts are actually run, feel free to ask questions in the comments — happy to go deeper where it’s useful.

  2. The theoretical design looks great, I wonder how integration hell will actually be for a project like this. I’ve switch to Node Red for my automation engine as it eliminates the need for the save/upload cycle that is needed in older systems.

  3. hi Rob and Tess. This is David, and your control system is amazing! I not sure if you remember but popped in very briefly with Mike and Paul to say hi when you guys were working in the little site office in the Rayong yard testing your new blade batteries. My hull is the one being built just after yours. Also met with Jim and Tracy the Canadians who were on Hull no1. and are now cruising somewhere around Phuket. Would love to have a chat with you guys to learn more about your system if you have time.

  4. Finally, a vid from somebody who understands technology to talk about boat tech.
The bar is pretty low on YouTube. 90% don’t know a kW from a kWh.

  5. You do not want propulsion system to shut down automatically…….make them scream bloody murder warning alarms yes, but you do not want them shutting off without being manually shut down…..i worked on a fishing boat that was later lost because of a fire suppression system fitted, what we didn't know was that the fuckwit that installed it set it up so that when the suppression system activated it shut off the engines….he had been told specifically not to do this and did it anyway.

The loss was caused by a 24v alternator that had a fire sensor above it on the left main engine letting out the magic smoke and setting off the suppression system while the vessel was crossing a river bar with rock walls on each side……there was no fire that would have been a threat to the vessel.

  6. ❤ exciting. Hopefully this will come to market one day. It would be interesting to see the build spec and components list for the boat.

  7. Excellent design and loads of software. Yes, I am a retired BSEE/CS and I love your design. Did you say that you were both Theoretical Physicists? That part of the audio wasn't clear. Yes, I also spent 40+ years doing telco/internet stuff, including ISO standards-setting activities (AT&T, PACBell, etc). There are times when I seriously miss the work but, at 71 years old and three strokes, I can't do it anymore. Yes, neither can I live in the wild anymore.:( The best I can do is vicariously joining you.

  8. If battery got hot in midle of a storm and shout down what you will do? Im just curious what will be your action then and what if sistem shout down becouse of one error in programing ?

  9. Looks pretty epic! Very well thought out. Can’t wait to see it come together and see real world data on fuel consumption at different speeds and also over a week or month of real world cruising where you will be anchored and gathering sun in between hops. Have dreams of a similar project some day. Really appreciate you sharing with the world

  10. As a low tech sailor (with those flappy things) but a high tech worker nerd, I have been getting increasingly interested in conceptual designs using electric propulsion, so to follow someone actually living it and talking through their thoughts on the design decisions and tradeoffs is a fantastic insight. This was the best video I have seen in a couple of years!

I think you are at the forefront of what a large part of sailing will be in some years, if the marine industry haven't priced out most people by then. I really appreciate your walkthrough of design decisions to set the scene, and greatly look forward to your future content going into the design, systems and components in more detail.

With most content I am usually a passive consumer, but after spending 30 minutes making notes during the video, I ended up spending another 30 minutes making additional notes from your informative replies in the comments. I haven't been this engaged with the content since reading Linda and Steve Dashew's blog posts about designing the FPBs on setsail.com.

    Thank you for sharing!

  11. As a SCADA and Telemetry engineer in a past life I was impressed with your implementation of your control system. You have followed the ASM (Abnormal Situational Management) guidelines pretty well. A few things I would change but overall a great result 👍

  12. I'm impressed…4 real…But I have one question… lightning strikes… I was lucky 2 get hit twice. 1st hit wasn't a catastrophe; the 2nd one (different yacht) fried. Everything…so what is your plan to protect all that smart digital brain?

  13. Don't buy the use case for the parallel system. If your electricals are gone, there is virtually no way to start your diesel. Modern diesels will fail due to ECU failure.

  14. WoW what Awesome video and God I can't wait to see the this project finished and the videos of it 👏 ✅ 👏
Please keep the videos coming this Vessel looks Fake Changing for cruisers 😍

    Cheers Mick & Nikki 🇦🇺

  15. This Video showed up in my Recommendations and my first thought, oh well.. not another "how i live on renewable energy only " Video. Dont missunderstood me please, i am 100% on we need a change in energy consumtion , less fossil and more renewable, but i watched tons of videos these kinds lately…. Long story short, you got me, when this short The Big Bang Theory popped up as side reference 🙂 anyway..awesome Video you did here ! Greetings from germany. oh for the haters : Day 989 without Nuclear Power produced in germany and 46% less Energy produced from Coal sind 2015 , lights still on, TV and Heat still on. Cheers 🙂

  16. hahahaha, "Those engines are then backed-up by two 400hp (!!!) DIESEL MOTORS????" four hundred horse power, wow. that's crazy much. probably to drag around those batteries 😀 lol

i must say u r being a bit hypocritical: u say in the intro, "without the noise and the fumes of diesel….." hahahaha

this is sooooo bad, greenwashing and providing false information. just be honest to your viewers.

  17. You use 700V propulsion to lessen you cabling thickness probably; is that why you are using a fiber glass hull over aluminum for deadly shock risk? Coral reefs are a bit of a problem for fiber….

  18. For pure solar your navigation software has to be quite different than the regular mid latitude sailing stuff all over the place now.
Solar would prefer sun over wind making it different even for boating seasons; bonus would be more berthing spaces in harbours.
Sea state / waves affect solar / wind & mono / multi hulls all quite a bit, so that is similar. Same for prevailing ocean currents on that spot and that season.
Having seen how bad even local weather models perform, I would opt for inboard data gathering (look outside!) combined with a phone call to the next anchorage for real info about the weather there.

  19. But could you sail ⛵️ it across Ocean's? I can see where your passages would be faster and more of a straight line. Witch would save time ⏲️.
But it looks like it is just a coastal cruiser.
If it could cross Ocean's, It would be the best boat 🚢 out there.
Thank You for this video 📹. It was very informative. And I did injoy all the tec stuff. I wish we could of seen what she looks like inside. And what comforts, she had.
    Ok until next time ⏲️
Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!

  20. Outstanding work. Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but with all of the electrical componentry, is there anything you can do to protect it from lightning strike failures, like aircraft which have lightning rods to conduct and expel the lightning?

  21. I would join the other comments on a standing ovation for the video and the project! Question: If there is a major electric failure, the diesel engines would have to be engaged manually, not using the digital interface, correct? How did you solve this?
