Damn, I’d been looking forward to Mina a couple years now… I hope it still gets released. A shame the company is imploding.
Same regarding Kickstarters, I was burned on several projects and I will never use that service again.
The Switch 2's eShop lists Mina the Hollower as releasing in 2030…
8:54 Pyre was good, don’t slander it.
I heard Schrier talking about this in Triple Click. It's devastating.
Mina will sell millions, if they get it finished.
They should have just made more games
Why is it that when a person or a company is making nearly all of their income from the internet, they think it's a good idea to move to California? They can live in the lowest cost-of-living area in the US or whatever country they're from and save so much more money.
If big publishers like Xbox and Ubisoft can nearly mismanage themselves into a corner, I can't really rag on smaller devs too much.
But you're right Mina can't be YCG's saving throw, they have to start searching for a bigger entity/publisher before things get even more dire.
I played the demo for Mina the Hollower and really really liked it. It's sad to hear these news but I hope it gets more attention.
Between Mina the Hollower having a Kickstarter where they claimed it was just to "build a community," and the Shovel Knight rerelease, I thought they were already becoming too big for their britches. Nope! Just turns out they were broke and trying to hide it all along!
Their new game doesn’t look very appealing.. Should’ve just stuck with the Shovel Knight IP
Not burst the bubble but Jason has made some pretty crazy allegations about Vanillaware apparently so I have heard.
Just stopped by to tell you I don't know you but as I was scrolling and I saw you smiling in a thumbnail with shovelkniight with big "Bankrupt" label I just made me not wanna like or watch the channel cuz you seem mean spirited. Don't smile when you're giving bad news imo
Yeah nah stopped watching when you started simping for that Jason clown.
I'm fairly hopeful Mina the Hollower can find an audience. Between games like Hades 2 and the recent indie hit which is similarly inspired by classic Zelda, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo, there is an audience for action games with a top-down perspective. Even if they get aquired I wouldn't be too bothered so long as it's a publisher with a good record like Devolver, Playstack, Chucklefish, Dear Villagers or Annapurna.
The story of most indie devs these days. The indie market is tough and getting VC or any backing? Impossible in this market.
This is really a shame. I love Shovel Knight but since then they only released a few spin-offs and that is about it. When they first announced Mina and I saw that not only had the Game Boy Colour aesthetic but also the feel of the Legend of Zelda : Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, I was instantly hooked. The moment they I announced the demo, I downloaded it instantly for my Switch and I fell in love with it and I was ready to buy it the moment it was supposed to come out….Until I read the sad news and the game was pulled from the e-shop timeline. Hopefully Yacht Club will be able to find a good solution and we may see this game later on ….
Insane how many people here think Mina isn't gonna release. Idk what it is but I trust my gut, I just don't see a world where it doesn't come out.
The fact you killed your credibility by saying you're pro the guy who covered up the SA in blizzard for years, I legit just do not believe any of the shit you're saying here, good day get better sources retard
I do not think that it is scummy to seek crowdfunding dollars for a project when you've seen any sort of success, and I think that Yacht Club would be in hotter water if this project was Shovel Knight 64 caught in this long gestation period. Low Poly 5th gen console style games are at a higher saturation point, and while Shovel Knight has the brand cache, I wonder if venturing into the Niche of 3D gaming could have potentially been wrought with even more pitfalls, even with more senior management on the project.
You seem like a asshole
I believe mina will sell at least 1m if it's good enough. Yacht club has good will from the fans, even people not interested will buy it to support the team.
I played the demo and its good but not mindblowing, I'll probably buy it. But for a very low resolution pixelart game you'd think the $1.2m kickstarter would more than cover costs.
It's like Yacht Club won the lottery with Shovel Knight, and their plan for the future was to win the lottery again with Mina the Hollower. Because their business model seems to rely on them developing 1 game per decade and it being a hit that pulls in millions of dollars for the next decade. It'd have probably only worked if they were like Studio Cherry and were just a handful of people working out of their homes.
I feel like people underestimate how much it takes and costs to make a game, if you have never sat down and at least wrote some lines of code, thought of a concept and came up with something yourself.
Not only that, releasing a game is mostly not a stable income, you depend on how much your game sales ONE time. Other ways to bring more income once people have the game would be:
1) a DLC (which at first they made free)
2) Microtransactions/subscriptions (which isn't the case here).
3) investors/publishers that would make demands and force them into a vision that isn't what they want for the game.
So during the development process you INVEST millions into a game hoping to have mostly a one time per customer return. Instead of NOT delivering what they promised in the Kickstarter, making the DLC cost (at first) and moving on with their success, they USED the money they raised for SK to bring those DLCs to life.
Don't get me wrong 3 million copies is a lot, but part of the money raised was most probably to repay their initial investment to even start developing SK. And with that same money they invested again into making DLC/making more games…so the cycle repeats itself. Yeah the office, the DLCs were not the best decision in hindsight, but they did it for the players, not for themselves (especially since they gave those DLC free at first).
Instead of bringing them down and being skeptical, I am happy that there is a company out there so dedicated to games and their vision they put everything at risk for the players. You can dislike kickstarter all you want, but without it there would have been most probably no space for sustainable indie development where GAMES are more important that PROFITS. And I feel that is something we should commend. They are going against industry giants, that crank HUGE games in very few years, while only having 15 employees. We are all humans that make mistakes and can't foresee a pandemic. It is not just about what they give you in a game and promise in a kickstarter imo, it is also about supporting a passion project from people who have shown they deliver. Not only with kickstarter money, but with good commentary, press and support.
To each their own, but I do wish people would support instead of tear down. You are entitled to your opinions, as am I, however in a space where the market is saturated and the economy is struggling, helping and supporting others does go a long way.
Abolish public education. Also leftists are evil. And yes this is the lefts fault. They’ve ran the education system for decades and they’ve been crying racism at test results for years and they’ve lowered standards which has fucked an entire generation of kids up, and they still refuse to take responsibility
Sucks to hear
I'm still really excited for Mina
yacht club always felt like they were resting on their laurels. Sure , Shovel Knight was a good game, but they never got past that. They garnered a lot of good will and had plenty of indie cameos, but never put out another game that wasn't a weak wristed attempt to cash on on their one success. This news doesn't surprise me.
Fk cube world
I don’t blame you in the slightest
Look it up if you don’t know about it
I love shovel knight, genuinely that series is one of if not my favorite games of all time and Mina the hollower seemed like it would be a fantastic entry. I can see that yacht club made some bad business plans but I still think they have incredible artistic vision and I hope they pull through
I just want to play the full game. The demo was excellent. It’s been to months and what was supposedly a short delay is now being called an indefinite delay. That sucks.
Mina was my greatest excitement for this year (until silksong released got announced) I LOVE gbc pixel art and adore yacht clubs approach to game making. I didn’t find out until the DAY OF that Mina was delayed. Genuinely so upset. To see on its switch page that the release year is 2030 because they just don’t know when kills me. I’m still so excited for Mina and want desperately for yacht club to succeed.
Bought cyber shadow. It was pretty good.
I loved shovel knight but I played the Mina the hollower demo and didn’t have a great time. I don’t think that game is gonna save them
I feel as if the character DLC, for as great as they are, is what's making Yacht Club Games go into a downwards spiral. They did so much Shovel Knight content that I eventually tuned it all out, and forgot about the company.
And given that all of it was free they couldn't keep a good cashflow going while working on their next games, so they were both bleeding money, and losing interest from the masses. I feel like Mina: The Hollower might be their swansong with the way things might be going over there.
Loved the Mina the Hollower demo. I played it multiple times, which is rare for me. I liked it a lot more that Shovel Knight. Hopefully they can release the game soon and it does well for them.
This game is going to be released soon, will be highly praised, insanely successful, and Yacht Club will be just fine. We believe in you, Yacht Club!!!
Maybe they should have tried something other than releasing Shovel Knight over and over and over and over again
Maybe they shouldn't have donated money to certain Anita.
No way Yaht Club goes down.
