  1. Ahh yes, the Australian navy, same group of folks that rescued Theirry Dubois, and Tony Bullimore in January '97, in the Southern Ocean, when their boats capsized during a Round the World yacht race… From the tropics to the ice, they will help when you're in strife..

  2. Yachts ocean towing tenders is an accident waiting to happen. These vessels are not tow boats. I hope the navy sends them a bill for the recovery of the tender. As a captain myself i always advise the owner this is not prudent. If they insist , I’m looking for a new job.

  3. Horrifically, the Maui grounding has generated an awful situation of rabid hatred and racism in the entire state. So much negativity towards boat owners, with an especially egregious attitude of racism. The ongoing dialog has spread to any boat incidences. We had a recent heavy storm and another boat was pushed onto a reek here in Maui. The boat, on a legal state mooring broke free. The hated is palpable.I hope Australian people's response isn't as caustic.

  4. I’m West Aust based, near where MY Diversity ran aground. It’s quite possible that the yacht was pictured at low tide on an exposed reef but when at high tide, those reefs would be fully submerged. Still very strange that the captain didn’t navigate that area properly as Jurien is the centre of the local lobster (crayfish) industry. Those reefs would be well charted and the yacht would pass thru there every time it travels between the Kimberley region (where they operate) and Fremantle.

I got married on a similar (but slightly larger) catamaran charter vessel called Odyssey

  5. There is video of the tanker trying to help that stranded yacht it shows them when the two hit each other. I saw the footage on the Youtube channel named "Dinghy Content" "Boat Fails and Wins – Best of The Week Part 277, at the 1:03 mark.

  6. I still wonder how several vessels end up on reefs . We have a Garmin complete system with chart plotter ,AIS, Radar and separate depth sounder with a xtra loud alarm tone on board . Either these guys been sleeping on their watch or they are badly trained in reading their instruments interpreting the data they get on their screens . I navigated a year everyday a Sunseeker Yacht out of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat along the coast to Monaco and Cannes and Italy . And this is a very busy spot in terms of Yacht movements . So I really do not get it when people beach or rock their Yachts !!

  7. The Australian Navy are the ones you want to run into when in trouble, they're good guys and gals, the best!

  8. How are costs covered in these recovery situations? Is there a rule for reimbursement of the tanker damage? I believe there are some monetary incentives for the time they spent helping? What about a navy, is there some payment for their effort in retrieving the dinghy?
