In my town in Texas during the FIRST gas war, I worked with a man who drove a diesel truck. He weekly collected used Chinese restaurant cooking oil and strained it three times and it ran perfectly! True story!
The haters will say that Africa has so many people starving. These people use vegetable-treated oil on their million-dollar yachts. I believe that billionaires are doing their best to make things better.
People in Finland for example have been driving on HVO biodiesel for over half a decade. People I know have driven ONLY on HVO biodiesel for well over five years. For example you just use your same old (or new) Mercedes diesel car and simply choose the other fuel nozzle at the fuel station. It's widely available and only costs a few cents per litre more than fossil diesel despite also containing taxes (as opposed to EVs which are impoverishing us with their not paying any taxes and then on top of that they require massive amounts of tax funds in subsidies).
So a few cents per litre for immediately being cleaner than EVs! How is that not cheap and brilliant?! A few cents per litre more for fuel is practically free compared to the required massive multi-thousand subsidies for the purchase of EVs, the subsidies and costs for charging infrastructure, grid works, subsidies to manufacturers, etc.!
We can certainly say that HVO biodiesel reduces CO2 emissions by 75-90%, that is something we can say for sure. The 90% figure is mostly true and for newest batches and according to the newest research that is true, but I guess due to very slight variance, possibly due to older batches etc. and some scientific uncertainty in the very complex calculations of such things they have to say that it's between 75% and 90%.
It's important to note, especially for Americans who have been incorrectly taught that all biofuels are corn, and even if not corn they're always based on food products and therefore create problems by competing with them, that HVO biodiesel is NOT made from corn or products competing with food. At least all the HVO fuel they use in Finland is made from certified waste product sources only.
Note too that the same refineries are producing a version of the same product for aviation, and it has been tested by KLM in the Netherlands for years already.
Thank you for your very important message! It's great that you are getting this info out!
🤩👍
Fun fact: some 20 years ago in The Netherlands it was a hot item on the news when people found out there old diesel car could run on vegetable oil sold by supermarket Lidl for about a third or the price of regular taxed diesel.
When the ministry stated it was illigal and would start extra monitoring and fines on the use of vegetable oils people criticises the government sating it prioritises tax incomes of climate improvements.
I disagree with their claim that it's a "short-term solution". Not only is it clearly proven that they reduce emissions that 75-90%, and they're moving towards that certain 90% and away from that 75%. That's massively less than Evs, even in cars! But also since it's not introducing new CO2 from underground that means the CO2 which ends up coming out of your tailpipe has in fact been recycled as it has been captured by plants, then those plant products have been turned into the fuel so there is no NEW CO2 introduced into the system.
Not only that, but it's clearly a great fuel otherwise too, just like all the other biofuels like bioethanol, biomethane as well as e-fuels and hydrogen. They're great because they are all similarly not introducing new CO2 into the system, and can even begin to phase in using carbon capture products in their manufacture if desired (except in the case of hydrogen, but that's massively clean anyway). They cost MASSIVELY less than EVs do, as they don't incur TRILLIONS of costs for Europe or the US. For those who are not economists: those trillions in costs makes EVs unacceptable solutions overall and causes them to be more harmful to the environment as they rob us of the funds which we need to invest into emissions reducing projects. It has been determined by the UN Climate Council that the main factor which has been demonstrated to most affect our nations' ability to actually reduce CO2 emissions has been wealth. The more funds a nation has, the more we see CO2 reduction actually happening.
Not only that, but the massive multi-trillion costs of EVs and their other effects like on the electric grid and electricity costs also causes massive inflation. Those costs and inflation together destroy countless lives as they create massive poverty (what's especially damaging is the unanticipated stark reduction in peoples'/families' wealth and ability to sustain themselves!), and I'd estimate that effect to be many times more than the estimated worst case scenario effects of climate change!
HVO biodiesel is certainly a much longer-term solution (even if just a first phase in a multi-phase transition to totally CO2-free fuels for our internal combustion engine cars) than EVs are.
👍👍👍
Regarding battery electric, just think about the cost! Consider how for example in the car world: the EVs cost at minimum 30% more than the internal combustion counterpart…often even after their huge subsidies and the ICE alternatives being punitively taxed and the manufacturer having to pay for carbon credits!
-Then you have to pay that subsidy (for example the German 9000€ subsidy per electric vehicle…) back later on in your own taxes. No-one else is going to end up paying that, it's going to be added to YOUR taxes!
-Then you have to pay for all those hundreds of thousands of charging station subsidies (can be over 100,000€ per station) in your taxes. Plus the millions of home chargers, which also cost money and whose subsidies you will also have to pay back in your taxes…
-Then you have to pay for the massive grid works (in the UK the multinational for-profit privately owned energy company which runs their grid just ran a massive publicity campaign, funded by taxpayer and customer money, stating that they're about to begin the largest grid infrastructure project in history…because of EVs) through your taxes and your increased electricity bill
-Then after everyone's electricity bill has skyrocketed you will have to pay more for everything thanks to the inflation that caused
-Then you have to pay for the massive subsidies and tax breaks which go to electric car manufacturers constantly (several hundred thousand for that factory, several billion for the other factory…several hundred million for that supplier company's production, several hundred million for that other subsidiary's R&D…and they ALL get subsidies FOR MARKETING!!)
-Then you have to pay for the loss of tax revenue from the car manufacturers as they write down all kinds of losses for their 'transition' to EVs and for their overall massively reduced profits
-Then you have to pay for the MASSIVE amount of lost tax revenue as the huge taxes ICE car drivers used to pay for buying and driving their cars disappears…it has to be replaced and you know it's the taxpayers who are going to replace it all. Or alternatively you'll continue to pay the same amount of taxes and have a significant drop in the services the government provides for you
-Then you have to pay for the massive battery recycling costs for all those hundreds of millions of tons of EV batteries, which those fake 'environmentalists' have taken NO responsibility for WHATSOEVER!! That is the best evidence of what a scam the whole EV thing is.
After that who would even consider battery electric being a good solution in yachting, with all the benefits basically non-existent and all the drawbacks exponentially higher? It makes absolutely no sense in cars, so it'll make even less sense in yachting.
That's cool. A lot of WWII and other U.S. Military vehicles run on cooking oil and many other types of fuel. If you use McDonald's used French fry oil your exhaust smells like McDonald's fries. True story.. 🍟🤡🍟🍔🥤
You forgot the largest advantage/disadvantage to EVO usage…….Your Yacht will always smell like McDonalds Fries!!!
i am kind of sick of all the "environmentalists" so i am not even watching this one.
this putts me off big time.
The priority for sustainability is reduce, reuse and recycle. The use of HVO fuel is a reuse of waste cooking oil so it is a positive step but price will drive demand. Bravo for highlighting this as even a small percentage use of the fuel offers benefits.
I do recommend that you talk to Wartsila among others to actually understand capital investments that reduce fuel use and that are cash flow positive. Various propeller changes, hull vanes and air lubrication can reduce super yacht fuel use in total and can pay for itself. Payback periods do differ based on sea time but it is worth promoting several of these efforts. They can be used on both new yachts and on refits.
Wouldn't veggie oil pollute the ocean just as much as deisel? Water & oil don't mix.
The real question is though:A) cost? And B) How much less range, or maybe you get more range but probably not, per liter/gallon etc? I I imagine that it is not as energy efficient as diesel is, and also what are the other disadvantages in regards to byproducts like maybe left over sludge or gelling, spoilage if left in the tank…questions David
Very interesting David, there are a few new ways of powering yachts and for sure HVO is one of them, as always price and availability will in part drive its development, its not clear if this or another way forward like hydrogen will be prominent, or will we end up with two (or more) main sources, abit like motoring where traditional we have petrol and diesel living side by side, thought provoking.
Great video.
Oh dear God, what more idiotic perversion rich psychopaths will invent? First utterly idiotic electric boats, now they want to consume food in order to propel their yachts. For the love of God people, just stop, use diesel it is most planet friendly fuel we have. OR make yachts with nuclear reactor. Everything else is idiocy and perversion.
So this is the absolute stupidity of Europe and their global agendas like 2030 and such. The carbon they want to really reduce is you and me first of all. Get that into your heads first. Second if they are on this huge kick of fuel from vegetable oil, err you gotta be able to grow vegetables first off. So why is Europe trying to shut down all the farmers??!!??!! This is the most idiotic things ever. O hI know they want you to be beholden onto the government in their 15 minute cities and they the elite can play how they like wiht what ever fuel they like. Wake up people wake the hell up and smell what they have been shoveling on you for your whole life.
I used to run my VW TDI Passat with spent french fry (chips) oil from my local McDonalds. Made everyone hungry for fries/chips behind me on the road
What is the cost per/unit compared between diesel and the HVO?
Where do the "Sevee penalties" wind up?
Obviously no one has ever thought of using vegetable oil as fuel. *Its especially good for powering AC and zero speed stabilizers.
Burning food (corn) for fuel??? How dense are you?????
Spending money on something that cost more and needs more energy to produce than it generates, crazy. Crazy expensive to feel good.
Used cooking oil theft is a billion dollar problem in the USA.
I'm not entirely sure that it's a good idea to stuff our topsoil into the fuel tanks of superyachts. Maybe we don't need to turn food into superyacht fuel. Maybe we ought to feed some of the people who are hungry rather than worry so much about virtue signalling rich people and their diesel powered yachts.
when David starts the show at his desk instead of onboard a boat, you know it's going to be an interesting video.
I have made this comment before David. Fuel cost, to me at least, is of paramount importance. European fuel prices are exorbitant the way they are. Adding additional costs using EVO fuel is simply not tenable for many yacht owners. Yes, a billionaire can afford higher prices, but a run of the mill millionaire may not be able to. Until alternate fuel prices come down to equal or less than traditional fossil fuels, the demand will not grow unless mandated or subsidized. The green concept is great, but if no one can afford being green, there is no point.
Everyone's yacht will start smelling like a chip shop soon 😅
Fish & Chips from the fuel tanks please, to go 🙂
Fascinating and encouraging! Thank you for sharing this with us!
So would that devolve to palm oil grown on slash and burn Indonesian plantations where rain forests used to be?
Don't know much about hvo fuel but I do know the best way to get rid of carbon emissions then people need to plant more trees they feed on carbon emissions and create clean oxygen for us to breathe
Warning unpopular opinion here! (no doubt they will hide this post)
This video feels like some carefully orchestrated expose' on this magic free energy that is going to save the wold…totally devoid of any real facts or logic…just more trust the science said authority tells you to…like we are mentally incapable of comprehending it?
Vegetable oil just grows naturally in the wild and bees go and gather it for us and fill our tanks with it, all while absorbing the evil CO2, naturally while curing cancer at the same time…it's its a freaking miracle? I'm so grateful these companies are so "environmentally friendly" to the demands of said Philanthropist Elites for them to do better so they can relax and enjoy the fruits of their labors absolutely gilt free? 🤣(Sorry…not sorry)
What is old is new again it seems, as rapeseed oil was originally supposed to be implemented for running farm equipment on long ago before your time, but said Rockefeller's had different designs with said limited "fossil fuels" (The Rockefeller's coined this lie that oil comes from fossils in like the 1890's…not even today, no one actually knows nor can prove that the second most abundant fluid on earth is actually from, just like water…also fossils are "found" near the surface, oil if found miles below them).
Earth's primary chemistry and symbiosis is CO2 is absorbed by organic plants and they give back a net gain of over 38% O2…the more CO2 the more plants grow…it's literally just like magic! We are not experiencing global warming, as we are actually in the Quaternary Glaciation ice age…Antarctica is growing daily with an average temp of -55C yearly.
Electric cars are another massive lie also, just some simple math like Force = Mass x Acceleration ; EV's are near double the mass of their equivalent ICE cars; so explain to me how a car that weighs near double is more energy efficient (E=mc^2)? Iceberg ahead, there is way more…
