I intend to ask Andy about this at some point, but I thought I’d throw it your way in case you want to talk about it: I am very curious what was/is involved with raising amd lowering the mast. I don’t recall seeing much about that in the build videos this past autumn. Aren’t you planning to be able to lower the mast when you get to the Panama Canal and put the boat on a flatbed trailer?
Hauled out for the winter? Is she going to be covered up until the coming summer?
I want one for free thanks
The difference in cost between what Alan had and a CLC kit could be considered the cost of the time it would take to build the Wave Rover. Having the parts precision cut removes having to layout parts on the sheets of scarfed plywood and then cutting out and trimming the parts. And the support from CLC, I'm sure, will be very good.
I want one!
Great news, Alan. This sounds very promising for all your avid followers who want to be setting sail sooner than later by building their own Wave Rover.
More reasonable than I expected, I will consider the options. I had a feeling this was coming when you toured CLC last week. Last year I built a kayak from CLC with plans, it was a great experience.
Alan will the kit include all the hull building mods you made to the original plans. Thanks ken UK
That’s a great collaboration. Seems like this may be a way for the builder to shave off some time when building. You certainly did a lot of patterning for frames. Will the longer pieces have scarfs, or is that still required?
Well done Alan, Andy and John. This sounds like a great collaboration.
Alan, you are going to be the Admiral of a great fleet, well done.
I see a a few 650s in future Jester Challenges and the like.
Who needs super sleek, high tech carbon fibre.
I will be watching with equal amounts of envy and joy as I poodle about in my wee dinghy.
The original idea / plan was to also build the split keel with plywood – will the Kit include this pre-cut plywood as well?
An amazing opportunity for the DIY amateur boat builder. 🤩The price info is truly helpful and seems reasonable. Your documentation and sea trials are proof and manifestation of an amateur boat builders ambition. Well done! 😁👍
These three very talented man in their respective fields have come together to make available not only a wonderful craft, but also a launcher of dreams! Whether you are a gunkholer, coastal, or blue water sailer type; a solo, couple, or small family sailor, Wave Rover is a wonderful all purpose craft.
I have bought the construction plans but have been reluctant to get started for I do not possess Alan's skill set to execute Andy's design. That John Harris has teamed up with these two confirms that this is a very special boat.
Thanks to all three of you for coming together, you have made my day
That is awesome!
Seems a fair price for what it is. How might someone source the keels?
Awesome! When you take your build time savings into account that is an awesome deal!
It has been a joy following your previous journey, your homestead project and now the Wave Rower project.
One thing i am wondering about is, that the Wave Romers dimensions are very tiny. I'm a tall guy, and i really have no idea about, the final size of the boat. A 6'50", doesn't sound of much.
May I therefore ask you a personal question, to get hold of the proportions Allan? How tall are you? 🙂
Great news, hope the numbers work out.
Sadly, I'd have to sell a boat before I could buy a kit….. but that's not out of the relm of possibility..
Some reason out of water, on a stand?
For those without a lot of woodworking experience, I suggest building a twin keel birdhouse with a watertight hatch and a junk rig before taking on your own Wave Rover project.
John Harris seems like a real stand up guy and the boats in his library of designs are all very cool. While I don't think I have met him in person, I've known of him back to the time he owned a Montgomery 15 (I own a Montgomery 17) and a fiberglass folkboat (I think a Contessa 26 like you had, Alan?) that he painted bright red.
Seems like a WR kit could be a great option for the people wanting to kick start their build.
