  1. It's a tough time for Finn. The most important thing is how he responds to this moment in time. To that end we are proud of how he is doing. Ironically the encumbant is now sick with no back up!

  2. That was heartbreaking to watch. Shattered dreams can be a real bugger. However, from what we have all seen with Finn, he'll be back. Stay strong. Best wishes.

  3. With what you stated both as a parent and an athlete yourself, l would like to suggest Finn try for the Australian rowing team or another country of his choice. that is when he feels healthy enough to continue his training. He is an awesome athlete and as you stated is being railroaded by bureaucratic indifference and corporate selfishness instead of true sportsmanship. Good luck Finn and keep trying, get well, train and prove them wrong both for yourself and the sculls sport. One thing though. Please do not go celebrating after you win your next race. your awesome sir.

  4. Finn, chin up and move forward until that time arrives for you to be back in the game. You have wonderful parents and siblings take advantage of that!

  5. I am truly heartbroken for Finn. It feels very unfair that the numbers count for them only sometimes. Looking at all the comments in here I know that the support for you is huge and real. If this would be a democratic thing, this community already knows who the team member for the Olympics would be. Hope there are other options and possibilities for him.

  6. So disappointing for Finn. Such a huge setback at the moment, but in the big scheme of things, even greater opportunities await. I know that isn’t much consolation for someone who has worked so long and hard for this moment. The Thai people are so wonderful. Glad for Ivan and his friends, that they had this time together.

  7. Hello Rob I cannot imagine what all of you are going through but your son is taking a risk if he's pushing his health I pray to God for him to heal so he can carry on with his dream God bless all of you for supporting his dream watching from USA California❤❤❤❤❤

  8. Hey guys. So gutted for Finn after all his hard work. Seems to me Elite Sports here in New Zealand still has a lot to learn about care of their athletes. But that's just me ranting. So impressed with how Ivan is getting on with his Thai friends without a shared language. The Thai people are very welcoming and friendly, as I remember them when I visited.
I'm looking at moving off the boat for a while as my work is offering me a permanent contract which means I would probably stay in Tauranga until I'm 65 next year. I don't think marina management would be happy for me to stay that long. Also want to help my Aunt pay her rent, so I will board with her. On a plus note, after 6 months of my fridge not working, I thought maybe I should have a look at my batteries. A couple of litres of water later, my fridge is working again! Bit embarrassed I didn't think of that before!

  9. For me, it was negligent to put him back in the boat and the coaches /managers do have a duty of care no matter the level of sport. I do agree with you Rob that the numbers come into it but I'd rather look into someones eyes, it usually tells me all I need to know. As a family you will back Finn to the hilt we all know that. But for now, the pain and the hurt will sting a lot and it should when you want it that bad. As Finn processes everything in his mind, the hurt/pain will subside and become his drive, his drive will become his focus, his focus will enable him to get back into training. Finn, whatever you decide all the very best. It'd be really cool if you shoved it right up 'em though

  10. So sorry to hear about Finn. Finn it’s obvious you’re a good, strong young man and a great athlete. I’m certain once you get over the viral fatigue you’ll come back stronger than ever! It brought some happy tears to my eyes watching Finn and Rob rowing together! That was awesome! So glad Ivan is having fun with friends and hope you’re doing good as well Rachel. All my love to you all, you’re a wonderful family!

  11. And the other hand, glad Ivan has strengthen his frienship with locals. Hope the Javelot is ok to make short trip with Ivan's friends before departure… (in a month, with Declan on board again?). Take care. Safe journeys, good winds all!

  12. Finn's still mine and Max's hero. Brutal decision, but as they say – get knocked down 9 times, get up 10. Best of luck!

  13. That is so disappointing for Finn and the rest of the family, bloody bureaucrats, maybe the Brits (because of Rachel) should take him on? Best wishes to you Finn❤

  14. Note good news Finn , BUT !!! i wouldn't give up on training and continuing the program , as if you had been selected. You never know what might happen in the next coming months before the Olympics. As with so many other sports , people get injured and you would be on top of your game if you were still Olympic fit. Keep your head held high. There might be another chance just around the corner.

  15. Sometimes we think it is the way, and we insist on it as in fact many other ways we could not even imagine will slowly appear as alternatives…Courage to Finn.

  16. Is there an appeal process available for Finn? Put a proposition to the officials whereby Finn does a trial in early April. Create and lodge the proposition so that's it clear NZ has nothing to lose but could only gain from allowing the trial. So it's not just for Finn, but rather it's for NZ! Get my drift?

  17. Thank you for posting this stuff. Look I'm old, I used to compete in cycling at national and state level. I exercise every day and know exactly what I can do. Start of November last year I got Covid. 11 weeks later I have just managed to get to 80% of my level that I was coasting along at in October. It is a nasty piece of work this virus. The numbers and science say Finn should not have been sent out into that final race. They seemed to operate on a sub optimal neurone selection on that day.

  18. Gutted for Finn it’s such a shame that the opportunity was taken away from him! They say you learn more from life’s setbacks than your triumphs. Im also a big believer that with the right attitude and a bit of grit things always work out. It must hurt now but I’m sure your little man will bounce back and do bigger and better things with his life.

  19. I am so sorry Finn 😮 I know this was a goal you wanted to keep. But, ask your mom and dad what life is.
Life is made out of a collection of small beginnings. This is going to hurt for a while don't hold out the pain. Living with that pain will become manageable with time. Be gentle with yourself. We need to concentrate on your health right now. That is of most importance. We can do without many things in life, but without health…. A day a time. Is not the end of the world. There are better and more satisfying things coming your way. A man like you are few and far between. You are very special señor!
    Much love! Chin up!
    (Your Puerto Rican uncle),
    Tío Jaime
