  1. By the time I looked today I see all the advice and 99% of it is correct. You always read and check before starting a project. What happened? Hate to see the disappointment you are going to have on this one! Feel sorry for you here.

  2. Kinda looks like you only used one screw per board at each rail. you might experience more cupping and the screws from the back will lose their holding purchase. It is probably already finished but in a damp climate like yours or any fence use Chevron Shingle oil it penetrates deep into the wood and keeps out the moisture.

  3. There are a lot of comments here that I agree with, yes to a horizontal gravel board that is sacrificial and takes the rot, yes to face screws or coach bolts, yes to not putting the boards tight together when they are going to warp, yes to not creating a sail by having a 1"gap between the boards. But we love your effort and enthusiasm. I'd have loved to have had a young man like you working for me when I ran a building business.

Please know that I, and I'm sure the other "experts", HATE telling you what you should have done, so here's an idea, why don't you tell us your next project and we can get all our "advice" out of our respective systems and just enjoy watching you create your home.
I told my wife that if I visited PC I wouldn't be able to help myself from being your labourer! Good luck you two.

  4. Mental matt needs to go to home Depot to the contractor desk and ask if he needs a permit to build then mental matt has to look up the zoning laws and see if the height of the fence is legal .. then mental matt has to see he's interfering with the eco system and wild life, mental matt has no regard for the laws that protect the public and the environment.. if a hurricane blows that fences away mental matt is going to kill people, mental matt already bought property that was abandoned due to code violations.. follow the law mental matt! A building permit is not that much!

  5. Come on Matt, we all got the same YouTube. Ya gotta do better than that. First possible fail. All fixable, but easier once and done! As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇

  6. table saw with a taper jig is quick to edge- all ur future lumber. top should have nailer within 8 in to prevent twisting/ bowing cut down? nice thick panels . good lumber is prob not a commodity in pr?

  7. Well crap. I absolutely believe that a significant number of people who watch your videos just scream at the screen and want to reach through to PR, hit a time machine button, and help you with some simple stuff that you are doing wrong, with good intentions, but crap is gunna fall apart quickly (as in won't make a year). You broke all your stringers on the same post, you back screwed 3/4" fence pickets. Wont hold up as in wont hold up for a year. crap. time machine, wish I could help ya BEFORE all your great labor goes for naught. But I still watch, thats the real goal I guess. Would be fun to help you all.

  8. You will probably regret putting them tight together you should have gone with a 4mm or 5mm gap as withith the swelling and shrinkage that will eventually bow and twist

  9. Looks great…But those board touching the ground are going to suck up the moisture from the ground…. maybe you can remove some dirt underneath them..

  10. It’s amazing how professional your handy work that you guys do on the boat and your home. We enjoy watching all the work you do and the progress. I hope you used pressure treated wood to help keeping from rotting and keep the termites out after a few months of the wood drying then you can stain and seal so they last as the wood drys you’ll notice after about a year you’ll notice that the wood will have shrunk and you will have gaps between the planks.

  11. I think it would be a cool idea to put a couple of windows in the fence, you could see out to the road if you needed to, but also keep it private….its looking nice

  12. Dear Mental Matt:

According to the General Code, fences in residential districts in San Juan Capistrano, Puerto Rico, cannot be taller than six feet if they are built within required side or rear yards.

    General Code

Sec. 9-3.517. Fences, walls, and hedges. – General Code

If adjacent property owner refuses permission, provision shall be waived. (c) Residential districts. The following requirements shall apply to fences in all residential districts: (1) Fences erected within required side or rear yards shall not exceed a height of six (6) feet.

In general, fences are typically limited to a height of six feet or less. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, in some areas, it may be permissible to build a fence or gate that is taller than six feet if it is necessary for privacy or security reasons.

  13. Well its easy to rip some boards down to 2 inches even with a stylisch angle edge and nail them over the board seems to close them. only nail one side so it can move freely.

  14. Sorry, but going to pile on some more here on a different potential problem. The tree that appears to be nearly touching the fence looks like Cecropia peltata. It grows very fast and so is weak-wooded and has a relatively thin trunk at maturity (50+ feet with base diameter of 20" in about 20 years) with a very top-heavy crown, so it's a threat–but it is said to have very sweet fruit 😋.

  15. you're leaving no gap in the boards.. the wind is going to do a number on that fence one of these days. I looked below and see a lot of negative comments already, so I'm hesitant to leave one too.. I just couldn't help noticing in your vid that your building this fence that will cover up that awesome view.. If you pause it at 21:36 (even with the tops being trimmed level) it's going to look like a wall of plywood. covering something super secret behind it… I guess I don't understand why you need to fence the edge of the cliff either.. You could have put in a short open white picket fence there, just to mark your property line and kept the view.. anyway, I hope it all works out for you in how you want to do it.

  16. hey good work I see that a lot of people are talking about the bottom of your fence touching the ground will rot faster, What I did with my fence is to place the bottom board perpendicular, the end grain is not hitting the ground, but the side of the board is and you can rip the board to match the grade. doing it this way allows you to replace that board when it rots and dose not effect the boards running vertical. I know it my not look as good but I feel you will get many more years out of your fence.

  17. If you have used untreated timber, you may have to spray it all with an oil-based preservative and insect discourager, such as pentachlorophenol or creosote. That makes it brown or black in colour and it has a smell, which I do not mind–it is a bit like s Stockholm Tar.

I make all my fences using pressure treated timber, which comes up green because of the copper. Unlike your choice of a solid fence, I split the boards using a saw, and make a lattice. Because a lattice on the diagonal sheds water and is much stronger and revisits the wind better, and I screw them together. The gates, if lattice, I glue using polyurethane where the lattice crosses AS WELL as screwing them–so the gates are super-strong. If I need to make the fences wholly vermin or light-proof, I screw galvanised roofing iron over the top of the lattice. This I can paint any colour I like. Not many critters can climb galvanised iron.
