  1. We had a German Electrician, bit of a hippy, on board when we got to Australia for shipyard time. First weekend off, he got nicked by the local coppers for smoking a huge doobie in the park. In front of the Magistrate in the morning, big fine. The skipper had to sack him on the spot, boat rules. Ticket home and cash in hand, never saw or heard from him again. Can't trust bloody Leccy's. 😵‍💫

  2. Question: If a yacht is flagged in the USA, but the owner is entitled to fly the White
    Ensign, where is which flag flown? Can both be flown somewhere at the same time?

  3. Interesting, I have been a long haul truck driver in the states for about 30 years now.
    I have seen drivers for one reason or another dumped out at truck stops completely broke with no way home.

  4. That is awesome, for yacht crew. I think, for cruise ship crew, if you are dismissed with cause (drunk/disorderly, sexual assault, etc.) the line is NOT obligated to repatriate you. Again, only in circumstances when the crew-member is fired for an egregious breach of policy or law.
    On Carnival at least, if you opt to stay at the home-port city after your contract is over (say, your boyfriend/girlfriend lives near there) in lieu of being flown home (in this case, to South Africa from Miami), they will pay you the cost of the airfare instead. That's pretty cool. Not sure about other lines, though.

  5. The legal facts of repatriation can be explained simple and apply in any case. Every vessel, even small sailing boats, have a list of crew on board, this is part of the clearance papers. This crew has either to be complete when you clear out or you must have proof of them leaving the country, otherwise its illegal immigration. Some countries (as french polynesia) even ask small vessels to pay a bond for the repatriation cost for all crew members.

  8. Lets say if you work on a yacht and the flag is under new zeland and you live in the states which taxes do you pay into? Do you pay new zeland taxes or U.S taxes?

Bear in mind that if this person was a member of the hotel, entertainment or beauty staff on a cruise ship they are not employed on the same contracts as the “seafarers” onboard – the non-seafaring (ie those who are not involved with the operation of the vessel but only provide hotel services) staff onboard are actually employed by agencies under different contracts that most of the time do not give the same employment rights as if they were on a seafarers employment agreement governed by MLC. Often 3rd party employees have really unpleasant conditions in their contracts that include having to complete a long time onboard before they can ask for repatriation and often then the cost of the flight to and from the ship is then deducted from their end of contracted term payroll…………. For the actual seafarers onboard their SEA contracts are strictly controlled by IMO under the Manila Labour Convention.
    The Master did the correct thing in repatriating this staff member but it will have cost her dear as the agency providing the worker will charge her the cost of both the flight to and the flight home from the vessel plus any other costs that they may incur with the incident like immigration/visas, taxis to airports and hotels. These cannot be bounced back onto a seafarer unless they are being dismissed for some reason but even then unlikely they vessel manager/ owner would try to reclaim. The issue of 3rd party contracted staff is is really sad as many Asian hotel etc staff work for a pittance for extremely long periods onboard and may be supporting extended families back home – they cannot afford to pay for shortening their contract if say a family member dies back home and they have to return before the end of their contract. As Master I had to deal with both agency hotel staff and seafaring staff who needed rapid/urgent repatriation and it was always sad when a member of hotel staff came to me or the crew purser to say that they needed to go home but would loose their pay for the entire contract because they hadn’t completed the 9 or 12 months they had agreed with their agency that they would remain onboard.

  12. You have to be able to spend weeks at time without leave. Otherwise it's not going to work out well for anyone. It takes a certain type of personality to live and work on a boat. Personally, I'd rather live aboard. I'm at my most comfortable on board. But it's definitely not for everyone. Great video and interesting topic.

  13. It shocked me that this young woman you mentioned (who pulled a swifty for a free ticket home) was an Australian.

    I had heard, from many yacht crew employers, that Australian crew were highly desired because of their good work ethic and tolerance.

    This was many years ago, maybe things have changed?

    I hope not.

    I know you would not intentionally besmirch Aussie crew, I just felt I must mention their
    reputation in case viewers made a negative assumption.

  14. is there some registry that lists ships that have been arrested? Some list somewhere that keeps track of all past incidents? Does the yacht management company have any responsibility in cases of fired employees? pay, repatriation, etc?

  15. The same rules apply to smaller boats I sailed 39 feet sailboat I sailed across the Atlantic with 2 friends who dropped off in barbados for whom I had to pay the flight home.

  16. Never worked yachts, but a buddy who has done it for years says its a great life if you can put up with the downsides.

  17. Hope they can't beat you with a stick if you're in territorial waters as that country law takes precedent but when you're in international waters they can beat you with the stick because the law of the flaged state takes precedent.

  18. Regarding the girl wanting to leave. Is she not subject to ships articles for the voyage. In the UK unless released for extraordinary reasons you are contracted for that voyage until you return to UK waters or Brest to Elbe.
