Are you sure that connecting a lithium battery to your alternator will burn it out? Yes, the lithium can take a very high current, but the alternator's output will be limited by how fast it's turning… I don't see this burning it out unless you have very poor air circulation around the alternator and it cooks itself. But a lead acid battery that's discharged to like 11 volts would also take a lot of current. I don't think you'd worry about that burning out your alternator…
If you just connect a lithium battery to your alternator and the battery's BMS shuts down the charging so the current into it suddenly goes to zero, then there will be a large EMF spike on the alternator's output and that can fry the alternator's regulator (and possibly equipment connected to it), but you keep a lead battery connected to the alternator, it will act like a capacitor and not let that happen.
Have your burned out your alternator due to that lithium battery already?
after seeing the state of your boat, i look forward to your refit faze.
You need to get out of there , That place looks Dangerous !
Sam have you forgotten to maintain your pirate ship for awhile😂😂,you have so much salt aboard you can call her a cargo ship🤭🤭👍👍❤💯
Are you OK? This is so Janky!
Hi Sam,
You never disapoint, thank you for another great video. Great videography.
Take care and God Bless.
Word on the systems maintenance, ho(l)mes!
Dakar used to be a great place to live for French and locals alike when run by the French .. But like the vast majority of Africa countries post indépendance as soon as the local African politicians took over the countries have been trashed and large numbers of the population try and come to Europe to live in the countries of their previous colonial powers .. how dumb is that !
You have a 3d printer on-board? Those spacers look 3d printed
Squirt some graphite powder in ur track occasionally, makes a huge difference for raising/lowering main sail. I don't have mast steps, but it would probably work well on freeing those up as well. Thanks for continuing to provide an honest and genuine portrale of life on a sailboat, it means everything Sam.
Thanks!
Those police riot vans had gunports … B.T.W. $200 U.S. to patch up a sail in Senegal..!!
Thanks for the great videos!
There are several reasons why you need the DC to DC converter and do not charge a LiFePO4 from an alternator. Firstly, the internal impedance of LiFePO4 is much lower than lead acid, which causes excessive current draw (and an overheating or fire risk). Secondly, if the BMS shuts down, yoyr alternator woukd feed into a 'no load', causing a voltage surge. Thirdly, when the LiFePO4 is neaky fully charged (ie low current) the alternator can be unstable (hunt). Your DC to DC converter was not only a wise investment but an essential one.
JB weld to hold lead weight?
Just perfect!
Regarding the bolt you retapped on top of the mast ,I would’ve used a piece of the threaded rod you have and thru bolted that top hole and put a double nut on it and that would’ve been a much stronger repair then what is there now,I guarantee the existing screw will fall out again in time, that’s too important a piece too do a sketchy repair on….I believe that’s what help hold your mast vertical,,,it’s a 15 minute job to do…
I used a bungy with the lead….made it more adjustable….
🇿🇦♥️
How big is your boat?
Epic love watching your videos keep it up friend of God
