More chain would have acted as a shock absorber so it wouldn't have ripped the too-light-duty winch apart.
Always a second anchor when not attended.
A snubber on the anchor chain takes the strain off the winch.
Inadequate snubber at end of anchor chain.
Winches are never for pulling a stuck anchor or anchoring. It is not for breaking the anchor off the bottom. That is why you have a Sampson post, to take the strain.
A hearty blend of indifference and incompetence by that demolition crew. Looks like they know they're getting paid no matter the result.

This was sickening to watch. I just had a visual of some backwoods tow truck clan come out of the Appalachians having no frocking clue what they are doing just completely destroying that boat and ensuring it is beyond salvageable.

Second … with that hull damage, keel damage, chainplate ripped off, and internal damage – this boat was never salvageable
Fools and sailors. A recent story of a yacht who was going to snub but delayed it in strong winds. Before he could arrest the situation all was gone. SNUB immediately upon setting your anchor. The thing that disappoints me about this story is nobody accepts that there was a F++ up. First lesson in life is admit your mistakes.
