  2. I mistakenly bough a boat with a mercury Tower of power that had low compression already. I should have known with the amount of cranking it took to start. It was too big of a job to rebuild, god bless you if your willing to do it yourself

  3. Went from the issues of outboard engine types to the comparison or your personal belief on inboard vs outboard. Id have to disagree with you. Outboards are better for a few reasons youve missed. I seen a inboard engine tangle the prop on rope, stall and float onto a reef where the boat punctured and sunk. Tangle a outboard prop youve got access to it without the risk of drowning or diving. Let's be real most people that have a boat have it for fishing so loss of swim deck is total bs. Out board engines can be brought up higher in the water colom for beach landing, shallow areas and rocks or obstacles. Outboards are easier to maintain and don't require to be taken out completely for things like timing chains or belts.

  4. I am a retired US Coast Guard Machinery Technician Chief. I am certified Johnson/Evinrude and Honda. I have worked on most all brands out there. The older OMC 2 strokes were awesome. Now that they are out of business, parts are going to get expensive. The Honda 4 stroke Outboards are awesome. Less breakdowns, less maintenance is what made me like the Honda's. I currently have a 1994 Johnson 225 HP, 2 stroke on a 20 Ft fish and ski, I love the engine. My biggest fear with it is if the VRO pump fails, they are now over $500.00 to replace. As with any engine, if you go cheap on your oil and maintenance, it will cause you problems in time.

  5. I got a Mercery 150 2-cycle saltwater series. Doesn’t like to cold start and only electronics have caught fire while on the water. Runs great otherwise lol

  6. SORRY – two strokes are far superior to 4 strokes when it comes to a boating application. Period. Lighter, more torque and instant power= on plane much faster. The E-tec is the most environmentally emission friendly engine on the water. Far less maintenance on a two stroke. Keep them oiled, and they keep running.

  7. Why aren't 2-stroke outboards made anymore… 3 letters… EPA… They couldn't design a 2-stroke engine that meets the new standards. I love my old Johnson 2-stroke, runs great, simple to maintain and more torque than a 4-stroke rated at the same hp.. And it's easy to get the proper mix. Just use an inexpensive oil measuring bottle you can buy at any hardware store that has the various ratios for the mix you need for the gallons of gas you're filling up with (usually 50 to 1). AND NEVER, NEVER use gas that has ethanol in your outboards. You can find boat shops and marinas that have ethanol free gas. Nothing will screw up your carb faster than an ethanol blended gas (requiring a tear down and cleaning). Stabilizers won't prevent the ethanol turning to a gelatinous mess inside your carb when sitting for any length of time (no matter what they claim on the bottle, though they will keep non-ethanol blended gas from going stale). Best practice is to always run all the fuel out your carb when storing, no matter what gas you are using, but this is an absolute must for ethanol blended gas.

  8. Yamaha salt water series 200 two stroke must have to have been one of the most reliable engines ever made for boats. Never had a plug go out, don't see any smoke ever and it smells great. Still got it, runs like clock work. Out boards have heaps of torque considering a lot of them are v8 engines and the old two strokes were never short of torque, that's why we bought them, reliability and power, well, Yamaha anyway.

  9. has anybody ever wondered why you will normally never find a 2 stroke under a car bonnet.and why you can hardly find a diesel outboard? My opinion is because OB motor market is suited for the average customer needs. In all applications in which reliability is the most critical factor OB are simply not an option. About e-tecs they simply have replaced some of the moving parts with a lot of made in china sensors and injectors, turning an easily fixable machine into a russian roulette. Even the official shops could not troubleshoot them, leaving many customers disappointed. RIP Evinrude and congrats to the managers for their beautiful job.

  11. On two strokes, last I heard they were still being sold elsewhere, that may no longer be true. Cruisers would pick up 2s in the Caribbean, but maybe that was old stock and not new production.

    Purported advantages include better hole shot; lighter weight which the flats guys like for running in skinny water; Also, nice for the dingy for the mother ship, those portable 4s are now heavy. Maybe cheaper to make, I don't know because there really isn't a direct comparison due to fluctuating relative sales volumes.

    Pollution was terrible because it was directly run through the water. So you got air polution and an oil slick on the water. I remember paddling a white canoe through a marina, 20 years ago… Back even further a book made a big oily splash. It was called Polluting for Pleasure.

    One thing though is that boats changed to deal with the greater weight of the motor, and if we are talking the same guy, possibly his/her greater weight also (since the 4s are hitting us later in life). You can just throw a 4 on the back of your This Old Boatt, but it isn't ideal.

  12. You have a weight diffrence on the 4 stroke that on my16 boat I would lose some freeboard which I don't have much to begin with.

  13. I own a 1980 Boston Whaler Newport 17 that has been highly restored. I upgraded the original 100 hp Johnson with an 03 Johnson 115. It used the VRO oil injection and that was okay at first. Over time, the VRO injected too much oil which resulted in those clouds of blue smoke. It was hard to start due to fouled plugs and ran a little rough. I finally disabled the VRO and mixed my fuel and gas. It's easier than ever to add proper amounts of oil using a calibrated measuring bottle with 50 to 1 increments. My motor issues have all improved and the motor is a beast on my whaler. Besides, I like the growl of a 2 stroke outboard.

  14. The NEW 600 from Merc with the best ever 2 gears to lower rpm's and save gas , mind you its a 12 cylinder , holy ….. But I always thought why we do not have gears in the first place like a car trani. 2 gears is a start

  15. Give me a 2-stroke engine anytime. I used to fly ultralight aircraft with Rotax 2-stroke engines for years and not once did they let me down. I used Castrol super outboard plus 2-stroke oil and never had a plug fouling issues and the cylinders were super clean after many hundreds of hours in the air. Much cheaper to maintain a the power to weight ratio is much better. Who bothers about smoke apart from the crazy environmentalists.

  16. The amount of moving parts in a 2 stroke is far less than a 4 stroke (cheaper to manufacture). The amount of power from a 2 stroke is much higher tha a 4 stroke. the weight of a 4 stroke is much higher!

  17. my 2 stroke experience: unreliable, fuel hungry, smoke, low top speed, loud, inconsistent rpm, consistently dropping if i don’t wake up the throttle (i’m talking 3500 rpm dropping to 1500)

  19. You make some semi valid points. I grew up on 2 stroke outboards (actually had 2 strokes in my snowmobiles as well) and yes they were more maintenance prone, you had to mix the gas & oil, smoked on a cold start up, etc. but the packaging was smaller and lighter than today's 4 strokes (given that 2 strokes have higher power density). And yes an outboard can be stolen but I had the outdrive on my I/O stolen. My present boat has an I/O. When the boat was built the pro's and con's of I/O's and outboards was about even. Today however, the pro's for outboards is about double the pro's for a stern drive which is why you see more and more boats using outboards and why my next boat will have one as well.

  20. 1981 Johnson 40hsp 2 stroke going strong. I just started using a synthetic oil, not sure if I should be doing that. I never use ethanol.

  21. Outboards take negligible space of the swim platform , in comparison of stern drives taking internal space of the boat…..
