  1. That red cedar is 'delicious'. Such a wonderful wood. Depending on the wood flow, perhaps placing the planer/jointer next to and to the right of the table saw with both centered in the long axis of the space to maximize infeed/outfeed and reduce the dust collection ductwork. It may help with flow as well when the next step after ripping is joining or vice versa. I think getting the band saw on a rolling stand makes sense, and perhaps the drill press. Perhaps their tables can be at the same height. Once when we were putting decorative ends on roof beams we 'drove' the band saw and fixed the beam to make the cuts.

  2. Johan and Malin, new patron here; the Shaper – which I had never seen before – was the catalyst. I am looking forward to the boat build. Regarding the barnfind of old wood: do what you have to do to get it. Compare the weight and growth rings on any of it to comparable new wood. I would guess the old stuff is way stronger than new growth. Maybe do your own breaking strength tests. An old logger told me that new plantation spruce grown for 2×4 SPF studs in the North Woods can be broken over your knee. (I'm curious whether framing tables take this into account.) Merry Christmas.

  3. We truly hope your offer will be accepted, that would be a big plus in your lumber requirements. Merry Christmas to You and your family, we wish you all the very best!!! Safe travels.

  4. Now that's what I call a barn find, buy it! Even you need to pay almost as much as in the lumber yard I suppose the quality of that well seasoned wood in the barn is better. Merry X-mas to all.

  5. Hope you have a fantastic Christmas Ran crew. I just wanted to say how great it looks in the shed with all that light from those windows, great job all!

  6. How much teak was there in the barn? I am searching for teak enough to refurbish a 40' sailboat toerail. If you get the deal to purchase might you be interested to part-out some wood?

  7. Merry Christmas to you. Great seeing Ran III creation step by step. Looking forward to the next episode. Greg 🇬🇧😊

  8. Merry Christmas to such a lovely family. Your adventures have been such fun to watch especially watching the little one grow. I come from a family of solid wood custom cabinetry builders and watching you build this boat is going to be very interesting to say the least. Hope you get your barn find wood it looked well seasoned for what you need. Take care.

  9. Mahogany and rosewood ? My luthier senses are tingling. No worries tho, not worth it for me as its thousands of kilometers away.

  10. You guys should pick up a cheap basic robo vacuum cleaner… you will still need to vacuum manually but having it run automatically every day will save you time and help reduce the dust. Only takes a minute to empty it….

  11. Merry Christmas and thanks for this video. I really enjoy watching you guys work together. You are sharing your dream with us and it is beautiful!

  12. Dec 2022 Welcome everyone to the Third Annual Sailing Channel Awards! First, a big thanks to all of our favorite Sailing Channels who helped us pass the time as we emerge from the pandemic and allowed us to live a bit vicariously aboard with you as you sail around the globe. Second, thanks to all who voted and either viewed the videos or even became patreons to help keep the content coming! With that said, our top Award for Best DIY Boat Build From Scratch goes to none other than our beloved RAN. Congrats, and I must say, any damned fool can go out and buy a new boat, far fewer still can buy an old boat and restore it to a high level, but only the most intrepid, industrious, and skilled are willing to build their own dream boat from scratch! And you are sharing your beautiful farm with us along the way! Please keep at it and we will keep watching.

  13. Get yourself a construction kerosine heater, the torpedo-shaped one. They come in various BTU sizes, and they will heat the barn space up quickly. It will help cure any fiberglass resin work.

  14. I agree on the buy the wood. He has had it, all will clean up based on species – cost would be much higher to order it Ned. That cedar looked older groth, tight grained .

  15. Wow how the best in the world shines down upon you…must be how you approach life. Best Wishes.
May your project be shared with and bring joy to your benefactor.

  16. I’m guessing you will have completed the arrangement by next expisode, but may I suggest that you secure an agreeable price on the cedar first, then negotite with the seller on the remainder. If it works out, great! If not, at least you can proceed with framing the hull. Good luck!

  17. Hope you had a Very Merry Christmas and DON’T let that Barn Find go. The Wood is ready to be use plus maybe a Red Barn fundraising is needed? Well Happy New Year to your Family.

  18. Loved the episode and I swear I could smell all that fine wood from Maine USA.. Really like your style and wish you all a Merry Christmas and Great New Year…

  19. I can imagine that starting this project could be quite overwhelming…..yet with each step completed more light at the end of the tunnel is revealed. Cheers!

  20. Don´t forget to save one little piece of the high grade Mahagoni and Rosewood to build your own Les Paul Junior Guitar;-)
