  1. Long time viewer … love the channel.
I have some questions if you do not mind… As me and my wife would really like to just go take off.. retire and go sailing. We currently have a 26M Macgregor.. and love it.. but want to pull the trigger on a cat for retirement.. We would like your professional opinion.

    1) What "triggered" you to just go for it and buy a cat? Was the decision stressful? Was it a no brainer? How worried where you about "following the dream"?
    2) Sailing usually is about visiting nice warm and sunny ports, do you have issues with mice/bugs/ strange things that I might never though of?
    3) Knowing what you know now… should you have done the sailing adventure earlier?
    4) Being doctors, have you been to locations where you though "If we get sick… we are in trouble" or for the most part would there be enough care?
    5) I am an type 2 diabetic.. have Hypoparathyroidism (taking OneAlpha or Rocatrol,.. and Janumet .. diamicron.. ). Would getting my meds be difficult or ultra costly. (sorry.. technical doctor question).
    6) Did you find that by sailing, and being away from all the "fast foods" etc… your health improved? (eating lots of fish… or simply being busy and just eating less)
    7) Anything "health issue oriented" that one should consider prior to taking that "big voyage on the sea"?

Thanks in advance from a Guy and his wife from Canada..

  2. Hello and Happy New Year! If you ever get your settlement? Then, and only then do I see you back in a Leopard 50". It's such a joy to see you both so happy about sailing and not waiting for the build of a new 50. Much love always.

  3. Happy New Years Barefoots! Great episode. A lot to think about.
For the nerds: (And anyone please correct me.) Cubing the volume: (roughly) 50'/45' = 1.1111 this ^3 is 1.37 so the 50', 11% longer than the 45, is 37% more volume. If you asked most people what boat would be 'a third larger' than a 45, they'd say 60', not 50'. (A 60' would be 2.37x more volume than a 45.) Weight also increases, but as a boat is a shell not a solid, weight should tend to rise more slowly than volume (However displacement numbers for the 50/45 are the 50 is 38% heavier.)
Storage: I've got a 45' Hunter monohull. Shallow bilges, clear lack of storage. On a cat you'll have significantly more storage – which you don't want to fill up. I doubt you'll ever have to stow your spinnaker in the master cabin (as I do).
Two things I notice. First, my aft cabin (center cockpit) is almost as big as my bedroom in my house. Far bigger than I need. My cruising speed however is 6 to 7 knots. Most sailboats in my area are 40' or less. I just zoom by them. (I remember getting quite excited when we got a 28' to 5.5 knots. Now 5.5 knots is just an indication to trim the sails.)
Size. Everybody told me, 'start with a smaller boat.' What I'd already learned was trying to sail a charter 28' with the autopilot turned off was ridiculous, sailing a 45' with a Selden in mast furling main, or a 50' cat, with all the lines running back to the cockpit – and a working autopilot, is much easier. However, because everything is bigger, the tension on the lines is much much greater, it is a lot easier to get hurt. So I felt confident that so long as I learned how to handle lines safely my first boat can be 45'. So far so good.
Noise. The previous owner showed me how to control the in mast furled main sail which made that horrible screech. 'Captain Ron', barked at my "but that's not how to do it,' citing all his experience as he quietly jammed the mainsail. (I asked the previous owner how to fix it. He'd never had that problem because he just did what the owner previous to him instructed.) Captain Dan, highly competent, got nervous when I made the noise. He figured out how to deploy the main with most of the noise only at the end. Lesson here? Barking is more of a warning sign than screeching sheets.
And there should be a way to make a lighter weight, pulleys (blocks) deployable, aft swim platform – with the same stable articulated arms. (If you didn't have to factor teenagers it could be much lighter.) I'm surprised this isn't a widely available option. It's just physics (and engineering).
Bottom line of all this? Your Leopard 50 really was deluxe.

  4. Happy New Year BBD! I hope 2023 brings you all the 'dreams come true' moments that you seek. I also hope it is a safe and prosperous new year for you both. (including insurance payout!). Great video this week. It's good to have these discussions. Unfortunately, I have a large extended family so I'd like something bigger again (lol 🤣 as if a large family is ever unfortunate). My personal dream boat would be the Lagoon 620, which is no longer made (they now do a 650 I believe). So I'd love to buy a 2nd hand one and do some refurbishments. I just love the cabin layout and size that the 620 gives you, everywhere.

So all the best for 2023, and Fair 💨 and following 🌊 for your⛵ travels in 2023!

  5. Hi you two 'Leopards' … it's Bobbie (hehe) here! Never heard my 'name' being bounced around so much in such a short time 🙂 Seriously though with the little sailing and on water times I have done – comfort all the way 🙂 That and a gorgeous tall enough man to handle that higher boom. Gosh between boats being built, boat hunting and all the updates from you and others we should all be well informed on the ins and outs of sailing. So thank you. Are you venturing away from Leopard? Hard to beat some of their comfort zones – especially for the mature sailors. Happy sailing and Happy New Year … hugs from Bobbing Bobbie from Brisbane ☀

  6. with so many better builders these days putting out luxury performance cats, Outremer, HH, Balance, ITA just to name a few – i see no reason to buy a poorly built production cat like Leopard anymore.

  7. WOW! You guys knocked this out of the park! 👏👏👏 Terrific comparison and you addressed all the pertinent points that one would consider when comparing 45’ to 50 feet in length. I loved your 50’ Leopard and especially the swim platform. Considering the pros and cons, I’m really hoping your future is another 50’ catamaran! Thank you both for the very well articulated and informative post. I’m looking forward to the next video. 👍💝

  8. Great video with great points……since you are still looking….have you looked at the Lagoon 55…..it is the most awesome laid out and cozy boat we have seen from the cabins to the saloon to the cockpit to the fly bridge and the front cockpit…..in fact we are working on ordering one with the owners cabin on the whole starboard side…..the bad part is they have jacked the prices like crazy…..

  9. oom. 45 and 50 both looks nice for my dreams. But I have a grand child of them; 4.5 m, with no bed room on it😁. Although I can lie down on my little boat floor, close my eyes and imagine everything that these 45 or 50 have😊 with extra massage of the waves hitting my little watercraft

  10. Either way they are both condomarans ….. not real catamarans .. ie. not blue water cruising cats that can sail to windward at 45 degrees true. All you talk about is Apartment things …. there is no discussion on actual things that matter, like the ability to survive the roaring 40s. It's a joke…the 50 is a barge……..Anything under 10 knots of boat speed is basically crap..
