I really enjoy watching your channel. No drama just down to earth hard work and two hard working people that are great teachers about the amount of work it takes to build a boat .

  2. You guys are doing a great job. Look into a pressure pot HVLP setup for spraying. With a 2.5gal pot you can pull paint straight from a 1gal paint can. You can also use cheap vinyl hose for your material hose, keep it short and and just throw it away. Adjust the Pressure in the tank for flow rate. You can even get ok ones from harbor freight.

  3. Agh! I'm so happy to see you get some help with the mud. I suggested earlier that you get some proper mud paddles and a block sander! I don't know if you can make that mud a little thinner/runnier but it would go on a lot easier. Especially a skim coat as you get further along in the process. Good luck.

  4. Again an inline air compressor powered sander would make quick work of that area you were having trouble sanding, You are so advanced with the layup work why not have such a basic auto body surfacing tool?

  5. Try an automotive Hutchins straight line air sander. It is about a foot by three inches and just sands back and forth and FLAT ! Also you can change the fan on the spray gun to spray horizontal instead of vertical and that will get plenty of paint or primer into the ceiling 90 where it meets the walls. Slowly but surely get in it done good job .

  6. Like I've been waiting for this. If I just left a comment, you wouldn't have cared. But so nice that someone could show you. So. large putty shovel as possible and as large a sanding block as possible!

  7. Matt and Jessica,

A nice video. It was great that you took some pointers on applying the primer and fairing compound. I was noticing that while you were applying it with the 14" (I guess) knife that you were leaving ridges. Try applying a little pressure, using your index and/or middle finger, on the opposite side of the knife from the area that already has fairing compound. This will eliminate most of the ridges. It's looking good.
    Cheers!

    Blue Skies!

    Faithfully,

    James

  8. Man, the traps Matt must have developed over the past year rolling, rolling and rolling some more! Nice work guys! That fairing is really paying off and helping it look like everything is coming together!!!

  9. We love this channel. You both have so much technical knowledge with the construction. Keeping things light at the end with vocal! Your progress is amazing.

  10. basic bodywork – using a DA and fairing with Bondo. you guys have a lot to learn, I've watched this channel for a long while and constantly question your selection of tools and methods employed for various aspects. good luck moving fwd

  11. Re a vac bag–you know how with pre-formed bags you have one open end that you can close by several different methods, well in woodworking when using bags for larger irregular shaper pieces, we've used a 'bag' open on either 3 or 4 sides, then just rolled and clamped all 3 or 4 of the edges and done so successfully without too much drama. Just use a lot of clamps. If you need to buy a pump, all things being equal, get one sized larger than you need. When you are just getting used to a new spray gun and primer/finish coat, even if runs can be sanded, I'd say that's it's better to start with a lighter coat and work up to heavier coats, especially if you find you need to fill and sand between coats. I've found it helpful to tint each coat of primer a slightly different shade so when you're sanding, you'll have visual reference to how deep you are sanding. I'm guess the same could be done with your compound.
If you have use of an air compressor, a 5" or 6" air sander will change the time you spend sanding on your whole project probably by days; electric has it's uses, but an air sander is far and away the way to go. Used sanders are often available on E-bay, and rebuild kits are easy to do if needed. After getting one, you'll probably want a 2nd one so you can keep two different grits of paper at your figure tips. They don't make sanding any more fun, because it never is, but the random orbit will leave you more time to drink after you're done sanding.

  12. Well, its about time. I think most of we viewers have long felt the
both of you have needed to seek professional help, for sure.

    !

  13. Note to self: Next time I get the urge to build a performance fiberglass catamaran, build a couple of dingies first to iron out the kinks and get a sense how huge the project is going to be!

Note to M and J: Please look in to getting more hands-on tutoring from experienced surface preparers and painters. The good ones are really skilled and can help you save time as well as get great results

I watch the channel first thing every Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and some Honeycrisp apples:)

  14. And now we know what commercial boat builders have liners fairing and sanding is brutal and soul destroying sad to hear about the spare panels disappearing good job on getting to primer

  15. Still building the star ship. Plumbing, electrical, electronic. And you ain't killed each other. YET. But I bet you want to a time or too.. splash 2024?

  16. So much of the work is sanding. I too spend countless hours sanding in my shop on my woodworking projects. It produces the perfect surface for a flawless finish. Great job you guys.

  17. Yea! So great to see mentorship cutting the to-do hours way down! Looks like that primer isn’t too dangerous during application. But if the finish paint will be a very durable linear polyurethane such as Perfection, Awlgrip, Alexseal, etc., I hope team MJ is geared up with full face respirators (fumes absorbed thru eyes is awful), outside air feed hoses, and pretty high volume fans moving air through the area being painted. This is for either spraying or rolling. Just a few minutes enclosed with the paint fumes can turn dangerous; pretty sure I shortened my life painting my boat’s shower stall with insufficient forced fresh air :(. M&J probably know all this from prior work but I’m commenting here for others to take the PPE seriously with marine paints. Thx for listening;)

  18. Not sure anyone has ever made watching someone else paint a shower as fun, or taken such joy in the accomplishment. Cannot wait to hear what NSFW ditty Lizbef pens for the installation of your head. Go Team Johnson!

  19. Shine a light down the wall. It creates shadows of lines, lumps, and bumps. A light behind you floods and hides those imperfections.
    Great work guys, keep going!!!

  20. The honeycomb panel looks good. How much weight did glassing it add?
Elisabeth is a hoot, great tune. Is she living on a narrow boat?

  21. Teal at Onboard Lifestyle has used the honeycomb board on most projects on their cat. I imagine you know them or their channel. He has undertaken most of the jobs you are facing with some unique approaches. Well worth checking out the build episodes.
