De ce navigăm -- „Reflecții în lac, iarna 2023”

Spune, acesta este progres? Pânze, lac, șmirghel, scurgeri, pâslă, o bicicletă electrică și amintirea unui trecut recent foarte diferit. În 2023, ne așteptăm la mai bine.

  1. You know.. that boat is really in too good of shape for it's age. I guess I could say the same about the owner. E bike? Where is he going. All the best.

  2. You forgot to fix up one of your culinary delights in the galley. That image of you eating SPAM out of the can with relish is burned into my mind for the rest of my life…👍🏾✌🏾

  3. Thank you. Marvellous to see you out in the sunshine. When you eventually remove the grab rails and redo them, you might consider a product named Woodskin. It is, as I understand it, part varnish, part oil , and therefore penetrates. I have had some success with it. Best wishes from grey chilly England.

  4. Hi Christian,
Once again thank you for sharing your adventure.
And I like the fact that the winter has set out to improve on it's previous behavior. Sometimes it is sucessful and sometimes
not. But then again, what can we do?
Take care and we will see you on the flip flop.

  5. I'm a Tech Sergeant in USAF and I work on avionics. I know the pain of dropping small screws and washers in crappy spots. P.S. I'm going to start using the "a ferry will die if you drop that" line on my airman

  6. Just found you channel yestarday and already went through half the videos. Even told my mom about you and how cool you are.
I would love to do what you do but don't know the first thing about sailing.

  7. I had the same varnished grab rails with minor rot. So I grabbed a heat gun, removed the varnish, sanded to a smooth finish, then epoxied them, let it get tacky, then applied varnish. The will never get water in them and they looked fantastic. Minimal maintenance

  8. You sail single handed in most videos. Is cruising in a boat that size really practical and enjoyable for most sailors, or is single-handed sailing, especially for longer coastal-cruising distances, more of a challenging niche sport for sailors with many years of experience? I ask because a large measure of my motivation to learn to sail is to seek solitude in nature.

  9. Winter sir? I'd give an arm and a leg for a climate like that in the Netherlands (well, a toe maybe).
Dark 53°N, wet, cold, wind 🇱🇺

  10. I keep a small magnet on my toolbox. i moved it to the tool that i'm using so i don't feel responsable for the death of fairies. i enjoy your channel like an old friend.

  11. Thank you for your videos. We’ve lived aboard our C-36 Mk2 for 7 yrs…. Channels like yours inspire me to keep the dream alive and keep sailing. I layo in lax a lot and would enjoy meeting you, one experienced sailor to a wanna be.

    Happy crossing capt

  12. Happy Winter Christian! Watching this gets me so revved for the upcoming sailing season here in New Hampshire… Thank you sir.

  13. I have had good long term results on teak by stripping and sanding to 180, acitone wipe down , 2 coats MAS epoxy (in 1 day) which fills the grain and then sand down to 220 ( don’t sand through) then Bristol 2 part varnish. You can get 3 coats varnish in a day with NO sanding between coats Do 6 to 8 coats Bristol varnish is now owned by MAS epoxy Cheers

  14. When in doubt, do nothing. Monitor. Very profound, just like this old adage: "You see a lot of foolish sailors and you see a lot of older sailors, but you seldom see any older, foolish sailors." Bravo Christian!

  15. I had to bight the bullet this winter, took my grab rails off the boat completely. They're now home in the basement workshop ready to be stripped, sanded, and varnished (~5 coats of Minwax Helmsman Spar). Just looked too ruddy and worn and had some varnish on the non-skid to clean up…..went right by the tape.

  16. Dear Mr. Williams, I love your videos. I learned how to sail from an "Old Man" on the Great Lakes. I was on his racing crew for 7 years. After I moved away, he continued racing until he was 88 and finally moved on to the great downwind leg in the sky when he was 93. He was a great lover of literature, the arts, and jazz. Every winter, we would trek to the boat yard, sit in the cabin while it rained outside, checking all the deck fittings for leaks. We had a small FM radio and would listen to "Dick Buckley's Archives of Jazz" on NPR (or maybe it was the local Chicago affiliate). When I hear Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, or the other jazz greats of the past, I think of those days. Thank you for your videos, your great taste in music, and your poetic love of being at sea.

  17. I guess I missed it. What port are you sailing from in this? It is too large a marina to look like where I am from, Ventura (I now live closer to Port San Luis and Morro Bay). Ok…I will stick with it and find out, I suppose. I'm just impatient. Alrighty, got it…Cal Yacht Club…been there, don't miss the population, however.

  18. I suspect you'll keep us in suspense, but we'd all love to know if you're planning on another offshore voyage this summer. Perhaps the final chapter in a trilogy?

  19. Enjoy all your videos. Just finished “The Philosophy of Sailing” loved every word. Wonderful story of a journey across the sea. I felt I was on it, too.
