  1. What a great episode! Really shows the rolling and the size of the swell, which you don't seem to see very often. Lovely to see you calming chatting whilst all hell seems to be breaking out behind you!! Having watched throughout the "somewhat extensive" refit it's great to see!!

  2. H Mads,
Nice video again, I had a simular rudder problem on my sailboat, at the end it was the upper bush that was shifting to the middle of the rudder tube. To solve this, I had to remove the rudder and push the bush upwards again and fix it with some screws. Hope your problem is as simple as mine. Good winds to the carribian.
    Regards Wim

  3. Looks like Mindelo marina so just as uncomfortable as it was when we were, next time I will anchor as I thought the pontoon was going to pull the cleats out of the deck. Hope you can sort the rudder, if you fitted new bearings then they should be ok after such a short length of time and miles sailed. Need to replace mine shortly but they have done a lot of miles…

  4. That steering issue is a little concerning, rudder columns shouldn't wobble like that as far as I know. Keep in mind you can get anything shipped almost anywhere these days, so if you can find internet access wherever you're anchored, you can usually get parts shipped to you. I wish I could help diagnose it with ya.

  5. I love the comment about polishing brass on the first watch. As an ex navy sailor that stood MANY watches, that brings back memories.

  6. The watches are typical of Navy watch systems based on 4 hours watches and the splitting of a watch is referred to as the "Dog" watch by splitting a 4 hour watch into 2×2 hours watches, this means every cycle one watch has a complete overnight sleep. When you have synced into the system it is very good.

  7. I got sea sick on day 1 of my 4000 mile pacific crossing. First time but yknow what, screw the haters. It happens. The sea sucks sometimes but it’s no reason not to go!

  8. I love that bit about the comment that said that "you will never finish the boat and never go sailing". According to my kids, a certain person, said exactly the same thing to them about me finishing building my Farrier F22. When I talk about going sailing, I get the biggest eyeroll youve ever seen. I have since finished rebuilding an 11ft carermaran and I am absolutely determined to not only finish the F22, but also finish several other boat projects, build my own F22 beams and mast as well, and go sailing! Thanks for the encouragement and the further inspiration to prove the non supporters wrong!!

  9. Scientific medical studies have shown that sea sickness is often caused by a lack of sanding. That's why sea sickness occurs after completion of repairs, upon departure.

  10. You are certainly alright about seasickness. I am happy that you belong to the large group of sailors getting seasick for the first two or three days and then are done with it. As for the rudder bushing, in my former boat the upper (polyamide) bushing has had about the same play as you showed us when we bought the boat. For some reasons we did not replace it during our first years and so it stayed for another 20 years w/o getting any worse. One last thing you did again not engage the wind vane. Since I was really thinking about buying one after seeing your installation video I am seriously interested in the reason for not using it. Fair winds and a following sea.

  11. Little tip: keep the rod inside while not using it. The sun will quickly degrade the line and you will lose your fish or even just the lure.
Great on you for finally making the crossing!

  12. Ahhh Mads… The best kind of revenge upon those who thought you a failure is to be found through your imminent success… I wouldn't curse the opportunity to make and mend at Mendelo.(sp?) Better to discover and be able to contend with these issues now than half-way across the Atlantic during a heavy sea. Fair winds and Swift sailing to you and your crew.

  13. Got the first leg done, yeah! Getting ready for the next leg. Great the boat ready so that won’t pester you. If something like that should keep from getting fixed, it could put some mental stress that you don’t need.

  14. Can't believe the comments from your distant past, people… Looked like a great sail, now cleaning the stainless is a great idea! Can't remember how the rudder went together although I watched those episodes like Hawkeye, couple of turns on the clamp nut? make sure there's plenty of (silicone) grease in there. Fingers crossed.

  15. I've been watching the channel for more than 4 years. I am astonished for all the hard work you've put in and your determination Mads. Just enjoy the fruits of your labor. Safe passage and fair winds!

  16. Mads, hey mate, I am fairly certain that your whole project revolved around your love for your wife. I’m sorry that she is not on the journey with you now. Have a swift crossing and see her on the other side ❤

  17. Don’t forget to celebrate the beautiful, exciting beginning of an adventurous life of freedom! Congratulations, you’ve made it! You’re actually doing it! How amazing is that🎉 keep doing what the two of you are doing and enjoy all that meet and touch throughout your travels. Fair Winds and Following Seas, and I will meet you out their soon. 😊🎉

  18. How's Athena now Mads compared to when you first sailed her back to Denmark. I'd be damned proud of what you've achieved old mate, stuff what other crew think cause your living the dream. Awesome.

  19. I have been watching you for a long, long time. Never once did it ever cross my mind that you will never complete the boat, you made progress in every video. You can really see the excitement on you face in this video, good for you guys!!! To heck with the nay-sayers.

  20. Re. the sea sickness thing, I have done a lot of hours offshore sailing with inexperienced sailors. Most people overcome sea-sickness within about 3 days.

  21. Never left a rude comment about sea sickness but I got to say I worried for you for years. So happy it is working out.
