  1. This was a HUGE task, but wow does it feel good to have it behind us! We also just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU to TotalBoat for supporting our refit. They've been with us for nearly this whole project, and have supplied pretty much all the epoxy we've used.

So, full disclosure: we started out on this refit using West System, just because that's what Aladino was used to using. Shortly after starting the refit, TotalBoat reached out and asked if we wanted to try their epoxy. We were a little unsure, but their offer was no strings attached, so we thought we'd just test it out. If we didn't like it, we could simply return to West.

We got a shipment of 2:1 epoxy, with their fast, medium, and slow hardeners. And long story short, we loved it. The range in hardener speed is SO helpful when working with varying temperatures and different project sizes. The fast is really fast, the slow is really slow, and the medium is a nice in between – there's a bigger range here than we found with West.

We also really like the fact that the epoxy is low blush, and they mean it. We've had pretty much no blushing when using the epoxy. West does have a low blush hardener, but it's more expensive so we only used it for certain jobs. It's really nice to have that low blush effect sort of "built in" to our daily epoxy.

TotalBoat as a company has also just been so supportive and helpful throughout this process. Emails are answered immediately and questions are answered.

So – just thought I should share all this, since we literally used gallons of TotalBoat epoxy on our decks in this episode! I know when you see a product splashed all over YouTube, it can be hard to know "is this ACTUALLY good or is it just marketing??" Well, Aladino and I are pretty adamant to only use the best products on our precious boat, and we're very happy to have TotalBoat on board!

If you need any epoxy, we have a link to their website in our video description!

  2. These major retrofits are daunting to say the least . Brutally expensive for materials here in AB. Canada I am half way through on an Alberg 30 a lot of work . Keep your eyes on the prize. Well done you two are getting there good work takes time and it pays out in the long run

  3. W0W! This is more work than I can even remotely wrap my head around. What a monumental task you have taken on! Having texted that. What a fantastic job you guys are doing! Very inspirational to say the least. <3 😉

  4. This was great. I am facing the same job, thankfully on a smaller scale, and I learned a lot. Not too far north of you, and like you waiting and waiting for some less wintry weather.

  5. I was feeling anxious just watching. Very good story telling to be able to covey your feelings to your audience. Thanks for the video.

  6. The better I get at doing fiberglass work, the more interested I become in traditional wooden boat building. Epoxy and fiberglass is amazing stuff – but it is just not fun to work with! Congrats on powering through and doing a solid, clean layup.

  7. Great job on getting an important task completed! Still, I was a little surprised you even tried. Your list of things that need to be done is long. Why would you even attempt to do something that is weather dependent when there was so many other things you could do that aren’t? Your list is a great start to good project planning, Another is prioritizing and listing what is dependent on other factors.

  8. I am still loving the new format of your videos where you have interview style segments where you guys speak to the camera

  9. As you will know a Cape George 36 is leading the GGR (Golden Globe Race) so you have clearly chosen a great boat as a base for your future cruising plans. That should be entirely inspiring. Good job with the deck. Great to see Maya understanding the technical aspects so she can provide so much more support. Great teamwork.

  10. May it always be love of sailing that makes you refit an older boat it's working the Cape George. I know it has been more than a little job but the prices of the boats are on a sliding scale. And your making sure she's already for sailing around the world know exactly how much she can do because you took the time and Aladino being a custom boat builder and sailor. Doesn't cut corners so when the time comes you guys get caught up in a storm or something else you know you're boats a bitching piece she will be able to handle it because you been through her she's like new
