  1. Don't underestimate the wilding sailing lad. He got the mast up on this bad boy in a few weeks with no yard. Wild, good stuff Mark.

  2. Hi Mark, I appreciate that most of this is temporary work (Maybe you could keep a list of what you need to revisit, lest its forgotten) but could you pay attention to the accurate specification of the Bolted and Pinned steel joints. It looks like there is design for movement but not flex caused by sloppy fits. Could I suggest that you measure accurately and specify high tensile steel materials. Your pins for example will need to be machined with a cap at one end and correct size (max fit) split pin in the same material on the other end (or maybe a Nyloc Nut). Use washers, either side of the joint, yes even next to a split pin. Consider a modification to introduce a grease nipple to the hinge. (Your Dad should be able to help you with this). Threads are weak points in fixings, the cross section area at the base of the thread is a shear point. Given your future desire to go international with this boat I cant stress enough how important it is to carry multiple spares particularly give that these are bespoke stressed items, not normally available in remote islands,
I enjoy your exploration into your skill base, just be careful.

  3. You ask ‘Is it a gaff?’. I think yes it is, but as it goes up almost parallel with the mast it’s called a Gunter rig. The original Mirror dinghy is probably the best-known Gunter rigged boat.

  4. you should think about making things last longer.. all you do now , you have to do again… so .. could be wasting Time (the wooden deck)

  5. A Maze Ing, yet again. Bit of rigging to the top of that mast and you will be off in no time. Seems to me like you crammed quite a bit in to this episode. I have a 100w Allpower panel and it works well, would LOVE a 400w one. I am SO glad that businesses see the advertising potential of your channel with gifting you such useful stuff.

  6. Great effort mate! Whatever you can get done yourself will give you so much confidence when going to isolated places. Good luck getting the mast up. Necessity is the mother of invention

  7. You give shipshape a new inspiring meaning! Great work. I picked up your book recommendations as well best of luck to you

  8. I don’t get the comments: “great work Mark, “you’re getting there”, “looking good!” For goodness sake, are any of you boaters, any of you have any boat restoring experience?? Till now it is just all amateurish temporary little jobs which he has done. The guy claimed he would be blue water sailing this year!!! This Wharam even never had rigging!

  9. dude, if you believe you can get closer to home and find a more reasonably priced marina there, then i say go for it. sail it there. it looks to me like it would make it, but you would know better than anyone else, i mean you have scrubbed and ran your hands over every inch of that ship.
but i would definitely check what's under the water first.
after that i say go for it.
i mean imagine what you could do with all that extra money. that's a lot of funds that you could put towards the fiberglass work you are gonna need to do.
also, it would be 1 hell of an adventure for your first sail

  10. Hey Mark, did you know a 'hardwood' tree differs from a 'softwood' tree not iin the hardness of it's wood but the structure of the tree itself. Hardwoods shed their leaves in Winter while softwoods are evergreen like pines. Balsa, the wood that is often used to build model aeroplanes is extremely light and soft but is actually a hardwood species.

  11. You get points for great attitude and determination. Anxious to see you make it a boat yard so you can take more permanent actions.. stay safe
