1. I am looking for a pre 73 full keel sailing boat around 30 ft long not more then 35 ft. I think from that years the hulls are stronger and they did not save on laying polyester.

  2. As a guy who has been around boats most of my life and as a trucker who moved hundreds of them ,sail and power new and used ,I find this series of videos most interesting .and this episode especially .Thank you Ran-Day and Mr Dias for such a comprehensive and easily understood explanation of what you are doing and why .

  3. Plenty of YouTubers have re-cored decks. Mads of Sail Life did that and a lot more, so I don’t think any core damage automatically makes it a hard no. I’d suggest it depends on the extent of the damage, how rare/special the boat is, and how much you enjoy boat projects. This one definitely seems like a “pass” though, sadly.

Related question – are there any disadvantages to external chainplates, other than some people don’t like how they look? Seems like the only surefire way to prevent water infiltration.

  4. So when looking to buy, would it be better to go after GRP foam decks rather than balsa or plywood?

  5. if you watch sam holmes he moved his standing rigging to the hull and sailed around the world on a cape dory. The boat surveyed appears to be poor quality with plastic ports and the surveyor gives an honest opinion assesing this boat for its ability in the worst conditions with a captain of limited ability. crush it

  6. So carrying a small nylon mallet and one of those gizmos could possibly save you money because you could pre-determine if it is worth getting a complete survey.

  7. These surveyor videos are really my favorite to watch. Feel like I just sit here taking notes! Thanks for the incredible information

  8. This is so great, first-time buyer here looking to a buy a boat and this is such a valuable information. Can't wait to see the next one! When is it coming out?

  9. The Joy in giving is greater than receiving and its wonderful to have good hearted people like you two, I have a comment- What Caterpillar Engine you would recommend for a 43 foot Sail Boat

  10. To say that sailboat is ready to be scrapped because it needs deck core job is insanity. 100% insanity. The amount of work required to replace the deck, to do a very good job, is nothing compared to the rest of the boat that doesn't need any major work. The most important deck area is in plane with the mast and chain plates. There's always a bulkhead in that plane because it wants to squeeze the boat. The deck for a few feet either side of that plane needs to be perfect, no gaps, no epoxy fill, had to be solid wood epoxied in, the rest can be just a good job. It's really not that hard, just make straight cuts as much as possible, fit in good marine plywood covered in epoxy, and then put the deck back on. To throw away an entire boat because of a few weeks of work is horrible. Obviously the design of some boats with complex bulwarks that all needs repair can be a different story. Save the sailboats!!!!

  11. Good stuff guys. Much like RVs that I'm more familiar with water through the roof or deck in this case is the most common cause of death of boats. Keep the good stuff coming Randall and hopefully the Captain will be back with us soon.

  12. A note on different chainplate designs: the style with a removable bedding plate are much safer than a one-piece where the deck flange is welded onto the chain plate. My boat had one-piece plates and the metal was rotting from the inside out from moisture that entered between the deck and the plate. Nearly lost my rig thanks to what appeared to be bright, shiny metal but was completely dead inside.

  13. I really like the tip about checking to see how organized and orderly the boat is. I have done a lot of buying of used cars and one of the first things I look at is the condition of the interior because if they couldn't be bothered to vacuum the car then it is unlikely they did regular maintenance like oil changes.

  14. Enjoyed your channel! Just Subscribed.I’m trying to convince my wife that a circumnavigation is a great retirement project and went so far as to even start a little channel (@NavalGazingatCampDavid) to sell her on the life style….desperate times and all that. Lol. Thanks again for the great content. I have a whoooole new appreciation for the time and care it takes to create these episodes!

  15. Just arrived here. Great! Really detail information my boat shopping. Your detail graphics with the names and attention points are really informative. Thank you!

One question: Is there a way to know/learn the core type for the deck construction — balsa, foam, or other sorts — per boat apart from forums?
