What an opportunity to learn…that boat is impressive.
You need to get back to making your own content………..You'll run across a new woman in time…Go be a bum on your own boat….
My kinda guy there…..my boat has all the modern doodads, but if i lose power, those are useless. I was in the Navy, and one of the things that I learned was Celestial Navigation, I have a sextant on my boat as a back up, and every once in a while I pull it out, and re hone my skills. Sailors traveled the world for 1000's of years with out electronics…..why wouldn't you harvest that knowledge…..
Enjoy the privilege
Another fantastic episode. Looks like so much fun! Enjoy yourself!
You're back!
one of your best videos yet Popeye!
I love the new opening.
Finding out at your age that you can’t count on a bitch is a blessing. You are going to have a great life
It’s all going to click at once and you will get it .
That’s a n awesome boat
When you were talking about the prop free-spinning while you're underway, the way that I understand it is that despite what the transmission can handle, if the prop is spinning then it's not fully stalled out and it's providing resistance (induced drag) against the water. If the prop is locked in place, then it's fully stalled out and providing less resistance against the water. The ideal would be to have a feathering prop, but in lieu of that, leaving the shaft locked and the prop stalled will give you a fraction of a knot more speed.
Man ooooohhhh man that is a sweeeeeet boat!
I miss the vixson
can you use a wide angle lens… the lens which you are using, fills the entire frame with your face and makes your nose look huge and thick, which feels awkward… or at least use a gorillapod to give some distance to your face
Joel, get lots of practice learning Latitude by Polaris and learning Noon sights ( LAN, local apparent noon). Both will give you your Latitude, also learn to find the radio time signals( Greenwich Mean Time ), very i.portant to have accurate capability to know GMT, and watch error. for sight accuracy. Try to learn both the Nautical Almanac ,and HO 229, as you will have better star variety. The air almanac, is faster, but less selection of stars, to deal with. Really know your error in your sextant !
No Red light, on that wheelhouse,?? your night vision, is important, during nighttime watches
👍
If GPS stops working I'll still have my compass.
You are finally back. You sound yourself now.
I actually thought you guys stopped making YouTube videos? Didn’t you say that? I actually unsubscribed because i was sure you said it.. 🤔
😎
'Sextants, how do they work?' The sun can only be directly overhead at a single latitude at a time. If you know GMT, you can compare it to local time and add or subtract 'hours of latitude' from a table to determine how far east or west you are from Greenwich, the "0" latitude point on a globe…The main reason for taking 'advancing' and 'retreating' shots of the sun is because you can average the time between them and divide by two to get 'true noon', since it's tough to figure absolute vertical with any fine accuracy… Vikings used a plumb line on a basic protractor, and on overcast days, a 'Sun Stone' (Said to be a Calcite Crystal) showed where the hidden sun was located…
This is good. This is progress and I like watching.
Hi..JOEL..Were with you .
Once you get Sun sights down. The path to real accurate fixes is star sights at dusk and dawn.
I guess you will be learning the meaning of…Analema
Happy to see you pop upJoel💙
Great video. Could you please put the name of the books & the author in the discription? Thanks ⛵
Thanks Joel!!!! Aaaarrrrggghhhhhh!!!! 😎❤
Hang on, you haven’t read a book in over 6 years?!
Great episode Joel, I prefer an 60ft- 100ft boat so as to give me lots of shop space for my tooling and deck space for an aircraft and Motorcycle, am looking at a 75ft steel boat and it is fantastic for 100K…Your Hosts are wonderful.
beautiful ship that Joel
Good show Joel. Thanks!
Great crew
I've wanted to learn celestial navigation also. The book references were helpful. What a beautiful boat !
Excellent adventure! Be a sponge and soak everything up! The noonsite got a friend of my dad's across the Atlantic before GPS. Enjoy!
Glad to see you’re back in your element Joel! The word is desquamate😂. I have been watching for a long time now and you sound good after some doldrums
A gaff rigged schooner?
