Thanks! fascinating travel videos
We had the pleasure of meeting your family in Brumuda before you sailed to Iceland. Adventure and the Sea are in your genes.
We lived aboard 25 years, raised 2 children and crossed oceans years before GPS. Of all the sailors on YouTube, you are the only one I would trust to sail out of sight of land.
BTW, we have a copy of “Into the Light”. I hope you follow the family tradition and share your adventures in print.
Do you have a penny?
"Don't put your dick in the machinery" (17:21)…Sound advice. I thrive on what you do here, but ya'll seemed a bit cavalier diving on the wreck; heed advice at 17:21…
Any leather on the boat? Pack a washer-shaped piece in front of the washer?
Aluminium is maluable & can be shaped to fit due to its fine structure, mabe able to make washer from alumium can.
I read about how to reuse copper crush washers on a motorcycle forum. The heating process is called annealing, so they said.
You are da bom Holly. Thanks for such original and entertaining content!
Awesome very creative bush repair.
How do you reef your main in a blow?
Heave to?
head up to irons?
if lightening or a collision breached my hull could I use JBweld to seal a plastic bag or some such to to my hull underwater?
You found it! That’s great. I was so happy
I miss the markets in Vanuatu both Port Vila and Luganville.
Prawn Fries! Good find, but a warning, they are the crack of salty snack foods. As to your copper washer problem, as long as it not on a pressure connection, a nylon washer is a legit choice. I't been used in automotive and truck engines for decades.
If you need a gasket or perhaps a replacement for a crushed washer, aluminium foil is worth a try. Fold it into a sheet of multiple layers and lay the sheet over one surface of the thing you want to seal. Classically you gently tap around the edge with a hammer, angled to make contact with the edge. This can actually cut the gadget shape or mark out a line to cut with scissors or a sharp blade.
Good luck.
Always enjoy your vids and stories – truly lightens the day. For those with similar sealing washer issues: 1) drill in reverse through thin materials (saves the snagging), 2) make a sealing washer with cardboard using scissors/knife/whatever but then soak with epoxy and set compressed between two metal plates/two washers/even two bits of wood to expel most of the epoxy but leave the two faces parallel. 3) Hacksaw a tiny piece from the end of a bit of copper tube (if you can find a bit the correct inside diameter) and clean up with a file. Hope this helps someone someday :-)) Cheers BB
I LOVE how after all the jerry rigging you two did, you laughed it off after the part went flying – not too many people would have reacted that way -and boy, was that ever refreshing to see! GO HOLLY! GO DAN!
If the oil pressure sender( thingy) isnt being used. Remove it and install a plug which might be at the hardware store.
I'm sailing under Java right now. Havet watched a youtube video in 5 days because of the cost of Starlink data but I made an exception to watch Wind Hippy
Do you not have to sterilise your veg to keep creepy crawlies at bay
use teflon tape
A good type of seal to have aboard are dowty seals. Another way to get a copper washer is to find a piece of copper tube close to the diameter of the banjo bolt, and cut a short length off the tube, perhaps as much as 4 to 5 mm, do the heat annealing trick (heat the tube ring to cherry red then quench in oil). It doesn’t have to have dressed ends as this should crush down with the ends rolling outwards to make as near to the original copper seal as you can get.
If the only copper tube size you have was larger, then do the same as above but put an O ring on the inside of the ring, and when it crushes down it will incorporate the o ring and effectively make a dowty seal, which is a metal ring with a rubber lip seal on the inside.
This is like solving problems for astronauts on the Moon or Mars.
Excuse the 80's reverence but Macgyver would be proud of this episode.
Hope you and Dan buy a bigger boat and sail the world together
As a marine engineer and cruising sailor, this is just too hard to watch…
Was lucky to visit many Pacific Islands on my first trip to sea as an engineer back in 1975. Names of some islands have changed.
To anneal copper, heat to cherry red then let it cool slowly.
Three words that mean small, IS IT IN !
Copper washer heat till cherry red then drop in cold water it softens the copper.
Credibility lost. R.I.P. JP
I suggest you look into what emf radiation is and how it works/travels so you understand that you're selling SNAKE OIL. You can block all signals to and from your cell phone with aluminum foil. BUT, 1 SMALL PINHOLE will reactivate the network. So, a hoodie? Sitting your laptop on a mat? Guess that's great for stopping thigh exposure? So stupid, and so sad. I actually thought you may be a decent person. 🤦♂️
