  1. To answer Tim's question, "when would I walk away," The short answer is when the surveyor tells me to." Two years ago, I found a 1983 Pearson 303 being offered for about $10,000. There was one big problem. The boat was in Rhode Island, and I live in Florida. So, for less than the cost of an airplane ticket, I hired a professional surveyor who answered all those questions, appraised it at $23,000 and provided me with a survey I could hand off to my insurance company. Turned out the boat passed, was in fair condition(no headsail), and with the deficiencies noted, the owner accepted my offer of $9500.😂

Yep nothing like being out on lake erie in a dirt cheap sailboat shooting the breeze with your dad on the rudder an he says look over there some weather coming in an you look behind yourself an see dark yellow an purple an think o shit that's 50/60 mph wind easy 5 minutes away an drunk as you are you drop the main an take off the jib an put up that piece of heavy cardboard called a storm jib an the weather hits , now trust me when your in a storm with a Dad that was in the navy in ww2 and has medals for being sunk twice an surviving in the north atlantic and he says this boat doesn't have enough rudder that may not be the boat for you , so take your time , get the most seaworthy dirt cheap boat , lip stick an rouge is cheap , a solid keel , mast , well sized rudder , will mask the other dumbshit you forgot about 🙂 o an Great Video 😇

  3. I wish I could hire you it's nerveracking having no money and having to buy a used boat fer the first time. I feel confident in fixing ( I was a fabricator/welder for 10 years) but now I am disabled and novice to sailing. Love the content though after enough of yer vids I'll be ok.

  4. There's a saying in the yard where I winter my boat. "There's nothing more expensive than a free boat". That being said, if you're lucky enough to get a decent one (as I did) is saves you a lot of money to to pay for the necessary items to upgrade and replace.

    I reglassed the rudder attachments on a dingy once.

  7. I have a question. Why would you use fuses at all instead of breakers? I could see adding a main fuse from my battery bank in case it floods, but I don't see a reason to use fuses instead of breakers.

  8. For boats without real fatal flaws, how cheap is too cheap all depends on your skillsets, time, and willingness to do the work. You can't put a number on it that applies to everyone. It also depends on what the intended purpose is. Plenty of "liveaboard" boats in MD that don't leave the dock and would immrdiately break if they tried. My conclusion after a 4 year refit is to just spend the money out of the gate. I'm getting too old.

  9. Surprised that osmosis didn't get a mention here.. I've walked away from 3 boats due to osmosis.. yes, an early indication can be successfully treated but anything more advanced could end up as a fate worse than death…labour costs these days are a killer it's why we see so few beautifully designed wooden boats now.

  10. One thing not mentioned.
    Older boats can have problems getting Insurance. Most if not all Marinas require at the least liability insurance. Check out that before getting your work project.

  12. 11 years ago I bought my 1980 Watkins 27 sailboat. 30-some years of hoping, dreaming and saving; two years of research and browsing……
    After travelling far and wide (for me!) and seeing nothing but "bad" boats, I spied a likely candidate that had been listed for over a year and price-dropped at every listing.
    Sadly she'd been dropped back in the water just before a nasty storm, leading to (fresh) water in the bilge, a few topside scrapes and sagging rub rails. All good for dickering. 😉
    Last listed at $4600, i got the dealer down to $3850 all in; tags, title, transfer, winter storage and drop-in come Spring; amounting to $2800 actually in the boat.
    Soft foredeck, soft spots on cabin top, gel cracks around stress points; BUT…..
    a virtually new, 80 hr. Beta 20, at the time worth over $3500 used! And an all original, untouched interior.
    I can fix fiberglass. I can source sails. I can install bits and bobs; but I'm not a diesel mechanic.
    Sailed/motored it home 17 mi. and have had a glorious time sailing, fixing and relaxing for all these years
    So…..I bought an almost new engine and drive train, at a 70% discount and a sound hull and rigging came with it.
    Don't discount the fixer-uppers too hard. Cash on hand, deep research, dickering skills and patience may get you on the water, living your dream. 😂
