  1. (Sailing Parlay Revival) highly recommends (Ultra Anchor). Colin is a super yacht engineer and absolutely loves that anchor for his 45ft cat and there's also a bunch of YouTube videos about Ultra Anchor. I'm pretty sure they gave Colin a really good deal because he's a YouTuber. I bet they'd love to solve your problem in exchange for some honest feedback on your Channel.

  2. As watching you come out of the river, hope the boat is there, hope the boat is there. Well if this back seat sailor is so worried about your anchor, I can not imagine what you 2 are going through. Thank you so much for sharing.

  3. I would suggest 10mm chain and, Ultra swivel, Ultra anchor. But if you want to keep the 8mm chain than the ultra setup plus the ultra anchor weight (dumbbell looking one). But before any of that, how about placing a go pro on the current anchor, setting a timer then and comparing the footage to wind direction and wind speed history. I suspect (instead of helping the anchor with its weight) the 8mm chain is probably just pulling the anchor out as it flexes and releases.

  4. Hint & Tip:
I can see why the anchor is failing. The top triangle shape makes it more difficult to set. When it lays on the bottom, the shape it self makes it swivel over. The best comparison is a mantis anchor. which as a opposite effect than ex-cel anchor, as it pushes away the water while on its way down. The weight is in the bottom center, while Ex-cel is top center.
The Mantis digs more deep like a spoon effect, rather than the Ex-cel model than shovels the sand to the sides. Your losing alot on the Ex-cel model.
Not sure why the boat manufacturer selected the Ex-cel model. A good anchor is one of the top priority items onboard. If it constantly fails, replace.

I like many is feeling safer with a mantis, but ofc its personal preference and use for each boat owner.
A potential oversized anchor, say 5-10% is better, as for potential storms, wakes, etc.

  5. I know you said the anchor you have was ‘spec’d ‘ for you boat but it is s/n 3 so maybe based on your experience it’s not the best. You have to have confidence in your anchor it’s vital so maybe you should try a different anchor. Ive not used one myself but have heard and read that the Ultra anchor is now the best you can get and they have a 60 day return it if you don’t like it policy. I know I would not be able to sleep or leave my boat unattended while on anchor if I did not have complete confidence in my anchor. You need to have the same confidence in yours as you will see much more severe and challenging anchor conditions in the future I’m sure. Good luck and stay safe.

  6. We had an excel 7 on 10mm chain that would come out with a wind or current change on our 50 ft cat. Found it took too long to reset. Dragged too many times and did not trust it.!Changed to a 45 kg ultra , held well in some big squalls when other yachts were dragging. Know too well that sick feeling when dragging in a crowded anchorage.

  7. WRONG SPECS! IMPROVE ANCHORTECHNIC! having a Sun Odyssey 440 with 10mm anchorchain! Displacement: SO440 8.6 tons RR2 12.3 tons!!! Your chain is much to light! SO440 30kg Jambo anchor, RR2 xx kg? (Jambo is special for croation waters/grounds). TECHNIC: if I‘m in 5m water, I drop anchor to 3m, start going backwards, droping anchor further. SCOPE: 15+2xdepth = 25m minimum (10mm/30kg/8.6to -> with 8mm and 12.3to I‘m pretty sure that 25m is much to less). every m more counts! wait for 1st hold. increase slowly rpm’s. going backwards with 2000 to 2200 rpm till boat does not go back any further. snorchel on anchor for final check. DONE!

  8. With our Rocna every time it hits the bottom it would dig in first go.
We even did a NYE on Sydney harbour with our engine stuck in forward – because we knew we could stop and that the anchor grab first go without reversing it in.
If I ever buy another anchor, even for a dinghy it will be a Rocna.

  9. Need a different anchor. The one you have is garbage and I'm being polite about it. Rocna or you're wasting your money. Get the next step up from what you think you'll need and you'll be fine. I've anchored through gales in my 40ft mono with a single hook. Watched boats with two and three hooks out slide all over the place. The Rocna's are designed more like land anchors. If you have the right scope out the harder you pull the more it wants to dig. I've litterally had to go down with a shovel and dig my anchor out of soft sand more than once. lol

  10. dont forget when calculating your scope.. the depth is from the bottom of the keel and the anchor winch is 2-3 metres above the water, so add some extra 🙂 and then maybe a Rocna too likes been said

  11. This anchor business has to be frustrating. I have no doubt that you will sort it out . And on a happier sidenote look how majestic Nick looks in the water 😂 love you guys thank you for bringing us with you.

  12. We had a rocna anchor on our commercial fish boat (troller) and never had a problem with it dragging. We also used an anchor alarm so if we ever did start to drag it would go into alarm.

  13. WE HAVE A 36 KG EXEL WITH 13 MM CHAIN ON A LAGOON 450. WE CHANGED TO THE EXEL. FROM THE STANDARD ANCHOR THAT CAME WITH THE BOAT, WHICH USED TO DRAG . IT WAS A SMALLER ANCHOR AND DIDNT REALLY FEEL LIKE IT HOOKED UP . THE EXEL STOPS THE BOAT VERY SHARPLY NOW AND HAS NEVER DRAGGED . IT IS NOT FUSSY HOW WE SET IT AND EVEN HOOKS UP WITH VERY LITTLE CHAIN. IT MAY BE POSSIBLE THAT YOUR ANCHOR IS SLIGHTLY BENT, THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE EVEN THOUGH ANCHOR LOOKED FINE. 8 MM CHAIN ALSO SEEMS LIGHT.

  14. Love watching your adventures and the new boat looks very nice. Thought id past on my anchoring experience, i have a 41" flybridge game fishing boat which we do a lot of cruising with and our anchor is a CQR 60lb with 8mm short link chain. We anchor in a lot of different bottom conditions and exposure to wind, current and waves etc and have never had a drag problem. Our boat is approx 14000 kg. The only issue i have ever had is in a fresh water lake (Myall Lake) which had 1 to 2m of thick stringy weed. Would highly recommend the anchor and to make it even more bullet proof 10mm chain would be optimal. Cheers from Oz and good luck with sorting out your pick problems.

  15. As a charter yacht skipper in the Whitsundays, I think its under sized chain, we upgraded all of our seawinds 1160s and 1260s up to 10mm chain and rocna anchors never have issues! And personally even on my own 35ft mono 6tonnes I have 10mm chain with a delta which has never dragged. Big advocate for heavier chain

  16. One way to force an anchor to dig in that likes to fall on it's side is: in 5m water depth, let out 4 m of chain, reverse at 0.5-1knot & then let out the rest without stopping in between.
That way the anchor gets pulled into "dig in direction" like a plow BEFORE touchdown. Don't go too fast or stop letting out chain or you'll rip it out.
Hope that helps in the mean time.

  17. I had similar issues with our Outremer 45 (2004) with the same anchour and a anchour hook. My solution was
1 get a spade anchor, which has never let us down.
2 and this was more important get rid of chain hook.
3 make a pruusic loop from 3/8 dyneema which can go around chain 3 times
4 make a soft shackle from same size dyneema
5 loops in the end of your bridles.
With that done set your anchour and wrap loop around chain between roller and windlass ,then attached the bridles to the loop with soft shackle and deploy and all things being equal you are done .
The loop has never slipped in 11 years and the soft shackle has never come apart. The big advantage is that the connection runs over the roller with out issue .
