  1. Very cool. I got hung up on a submerged marker bouy in 100m of water about 2 miles south east of Lamlash. I called the coastguard and they sent out a lifeboat to cut me free and escort me back to a mooring ball in the anchorage. One of the guys had his own dive school so came out later in his dive gear and cut all the remnants of the line away. All for the price of a takeaway for him and his family. Stella service.

  2. Ghostbusters no ah well never mind ha ha how you doing ladies hope all is well loving your channel just missed you last time your were in liverpool maybe next time keep up the good work and hope weather improves for you both stuartxx

  3. Great video. It’s always good to share real experiences. I had to be towed once when the motor failed in one of our many narrow channels between the rocks. Couldn’t anchour on the shale so we lassoed a fairway marker till the coast guard arrived. I asked if they had rescued many boats that season. They said no, but they practice weekly and my rescue would be their practice for that week. An amazing expert team of helpful, friendly folks.

  4. Thanks for sharing this. It is worth re stating that people should do a VHF course to know how to operate on the airwaves and absolutely endorse your call early request. We had the RNLI Safety Team in at Cardiff Yacht Club last week, they were very informative and helpful – biggest single message was let the Coast Guard know early if you are in trouble. I'm off to Penarth on 4/3/24 for the local recognition of RNLI 200 – each station throughout the UK & Ireland will be doing their own version – well worth supporting if you can.

  5. Thanks, ladies. Excellent advice based on hard-won experience. Became a member of the RNLI two years ago before taking to the water in our homebuilt boat. Nice to know we're contributing if we ever need their help. Take care.

  6. Brave to share these. Often wondered if there is a stigma attached to being rescued. Then I was rescued myself and didn’t care anymore about reputation.

When I was rescued I was so overwhelmed by how nice the RNLI crew was….and I had taken most of them away from their evening meal!

They were a very happy bunch.

  7. So far, I have not had to call on the services of these fantastic people. I regard this as close to miraculous, the day will come, though. Happy to support your just giving page.

  8. 1:27 – Very happy to meet you as a subscriber and to be your tour guide of Douglas RNLI Station during one of your many visits to the Isle of Man 🙂
Spot on advice in this video and I would like to echo the message – If you ever have an issue that causes concern, give the Coastguard a shout to inform them of the situation. Don't ever think you have to wait until they become your last resort. It might be the first time you contact them, but your thought processes and ability to communicate are much better the earlier you call them. Have your position ready and the CG will ask you to update after a period of time.

If you loose your radio as the result of an electrical problem or water ingress and find you can not give an update, or elevate the call, they already have your last position and a network of computers to calculate your drift pattern and a multitude of resources of which Lifeboats are one. If a Lifeboat has been launched and you fix the issue, the follow up call to the CG may ask us to stand down or to carry on to double check you are okay, and this is much the preferred choice than waiting, waiting then launching when/if the situation has become desperate.

I have been woken by my pager at 3am and made it to the boathouse, to be stood down before launching then gone home and back to bed to wake for work at 7am. It's what I and thousands of other volunteers do. Absolutely no ill thoughts or judgements about the caller, just happy that they are safe. (Thanks also go to my boss when I arrive needing copious amounts of Caffeine 😀)

If Coastal Sailing, also consider installing the RYA SafeTRX app on a mobile device. It isn't fool proof and it requires a working mobile signal to work, but it stores your position as a track and your vessel details, number of crew and emergency contacts are stored on a database that the CG can access. SafeTRX does not replace your VHF Radio, AIS, PLBs, etc, but is a handy FREE 'additional' means of undertaking a safe passage.

Don't forget that some of us are boat owners ourselves and we are always happy to have casual chats about boating in our down time and stations have experts who can give free solid advice about safe boating. Look out also for free life jacket checks at numerous boat shows and Lifeboat open days.

It's great to see videos like this. There is, and never should be a stigma, concern or fear of speaking to the Coastguard if out on the water and finding yourself with concerns.

  9. I was in the equivalent of the RNLI here in NSW Australia for about 8 yrs as a volunteer. Eventually I was a coxswain master who had to lead rescue events. Whilst challenging at times good crews always got the job done and with a smile or good humour for those rescued. Such an essential service for all coastal communities and their residents and visiting boaties. The RNLI is a gold standard upon which so many services globally are now based. Go support. Best.

  10. Great video. We have been hauled in by the RNLI too. Lost our engine right outside Aklow. Fuel starvation due to a leaking fuel line

  11. Great video and sound advice to inform the Coast Guard sooner rather than later. We sail along the South Coast of the UK and you will frequently hear on the VHF the CG asking if any vessels in the vicinity are willing and able to assist yachts that are needing help. I just wondered if the CG makes similar requests around the Irish Coast?

  12. You just like to be surrounded with men. I have watched dozens of sailing channels and have never seen anybody give such good advice. Carry on sailing.
