4. VAT is due on where the ultimate beneficial owner is from or resident country, whether it’s owned by a structure or not. In the case of Abramovich he is not EU resident and therefore his yacht could go under temporary admission for 18 month periods. If under charter, he is also not liable, but the yacht needs to be commercially viable and most charters are for 3rd party charters. If he’s using it solely through companies he owns then that is not commercially operated and can see why it’s tax evasion and not tax avoidance.

That tender wasn’t really “salvaged” – it was simply removed for further disposal – its was already written off as not worth repairing – weeks of sitting exposed to salt water and waves pounding it hard and engines simply torn off – signals disregard for any value left – definitely after it was violently pulled off the rocks it was in even worse shape – true salvaging something is when you have something of value you preserve….

29. "Legally" does a lot of heavy lifting there. Sure, it is by the book, but that is a massive hole in taxation. People who reside in the EU, make their money in the EU, order expensive products to be built in the EU and use them around the EU can avoid having to pay tax to the EU by just sending their yachts to the UK or a tax haven for a week. I'm quite surprised this "scheme" hasn't been closed down long ago, and instead, EU governments are turning to income taxes or reducing benefit and pension entitlements for regular citizens to plug holes in country finances.

30. I’d be interested to know what was agreed prior to this salvage. Was it agreed that the boat is a total right off and therefore don’t worry about any further damage caused removing it? I would have thought engines in their raised position and the boat pulled off backwards, same route as she came in would have been a lot better. I have some experience of dealing with salvage companies and IMO they are only really interested in removing the boat and not how pretty it looks. I Would say that tender is without doubt a total right off. With all associated costs that’s one hell of a bill for the insurance co. to pick-up or is it a case that due to negligence they won’t be settling this?

34. Tax offsetting is the whole reason for the superyacht market, standard practice. If you have multimillion dollar revenue streams, part of your financial advice will be to own one (or two) as a loss making entity, for tax, laundry whatever. Welcome to the real world.

So many owners do the same and register there boats for charter but never accually charter out but use them themselves… it might be small scale compared to this but a big tax scam… i have even spoken to a couple of owners that said exactly that. So much tax avoidance in this world by those that can and making us pay more….
