  1. Enjoying the race but thought I would mention I didn’t find it easy to find the points for the last Coastal Race. There is all this hype for who will be what place but where is the data stating how many points for that last race? Is it the same 7,6, 5…. ? When you look at the Scoreboard there is no place for the last race. This kind of adds confusion if it counts or not and how much. Just my opinion…

  2. What have we learned? A few things in my perspective.
Firstly, while 'fully crewed' these boats are still undermanned for short inshore races. These IMOCA's, while unbelievably fast when they can stretch their legs, are simply unsuitable for round the cans racing. This leads to sloppy maneuvers, much space between the boats (or none at all!) and generally, for the armchair sailors, unattractive racing.
Secondly, IMO the organization should really improve their website and especially the tracker and statistics pages so that it also appeals to the informed sailors among us. Also the official video clips are often chaotic and not chronological. The start on the Solent, for instance, was particularly confusing. Shots from different boats, on different tacks and on different places in the Solent and absolutely impossible to determine who was going where relative to each other. With all this media content made on board, I'd think it needs better, shore based, editors to prepare the youtube and other socials content. They might have a chat with the guys from SailGP who have brought their reporting to a very high level.

  3. The output from the dedicated on-board camera-persons was particularly underwhelming given an entire berth devoted to their existence. A single video per day per boat is ‘poor’ for something that ‘demands’ round-the-clock ‘watching’ – and the website was poor, little integration between ‘timeline’, ‘boat location’ and ‘content’.

  4. So the ocean race creates a split in the Imoca designs? You can't win both the Vendee and the Ocean Race in the same boat if I understand you correctly… That doesn't make a lot of sense. A specialized Ocean Race type boat like we used to have with the VO70 en 65 became too expensive I guess, but if you have to design your Imoca specifically for the ocean race, then that's what you're back at. For long term survival of the Ocean Race I think it would make sense if it were setup in such a way that an Imoca designed to win the Vendee can also be competitive in the Ocean Race.

  5. Interesting points, thanks Niall! I find the challenge of boat design to be most interesting, so please keep going with that for the new IMOCAS and get input from the designers too.😄
