I want to elaborate on the amount of work and "was it worth it", even though I said I probably would not do it again, yes it was still worth it and we definitely don't regret it! Next time I would maybe try to have 2-4 months more time to be able to work in a bit more relaxed pace. But this time we were limited on time as we wanted to try and make it up the US west coast before the winter (did not really happen in the end though..). The boatyard period just quite insane, managing so many different boat projects at the same time is very taxing. What you might see here on the YT videos is people doing one task at a time in an organized manner, but in a real "total refit" you're actually juggling a hundred different things at the same time (especially if you're in a hurry). And with both of us also working remotely at our actual jobs, it was just a bit too much. Each day was pretty much the same: breakfast, boat work at least until dark, then a microwave meal and laptop work until late in the night..
Anyway, after these projects Lumi is ready to float, even though we still have a lot left to do! 🙂
This is for now the last video of the refit series… Next up is actual sailing, woohooo! If you're new here, make sure to check out the beginnings of this project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqXUUrIZKmI
Other than that, thank you for watching! If you want to support the project on Patreon, check the site here:

An amazing refit. And what a heart break to loose the footage and all the time you spent filming! I look forward to the tours
Your description of the parallel lives (both continuing your normal remote work whilst refitting) you both led during this insanely fast refit was a recipe for a relationship breakdown. Congratulations to both of you for managing crazy lifestyles and keeping your relationship ❤ going.
Don't ask me how I know anything about the effect that "working your ass off can jeopardise a relationship." 🙄
I am very impressed with what you've accomplished and Proud of you both !!!
It was very kind and honest of you to let others know the REAL cost & labour of a refit as well. The time is the part we truly never get paid for in doing a refit ourselves. At minimum wage and likely 2500 hours of work over the last 5 months , that's 50k in Labour if you were being paid. I would venture to guess you're a bit over 100k invested at this point NOT including your labour.
But you know what you have now.
I do have a question … you said you were eliminating all the thru hulls " zero thru hulls ". How will you get Raw Water for the engine ? And i'm guessing a Composting style head ? I assume you went with the Airmar CHIRP inside hull transducer for your DST needs ?? If you have time please let me know which way you went on these requirements…. Thank You and Best Wishes guys ,, keep up the Great work and sharing the journey !!!!!
great job and video.
Well done to both of you, fantastic job. Wish you all the best
Very adventurous going for the Northwest passage. Just to say, those dodger hatches were probably to get a view of the sails from underneath it.
As a landlubber with no sailing experience, I have enjoyed your videos in your previous boat. But this project has been something else, you have both done a brilliant job and I will look forward to your voyage up the Pacific and through the North West Passage.
The 2 of you built a nice home for yourselves, screw the $.
In your case to get that boat for a reasonable price it was worth it. If you have a good choice of many always pay as much as you can to get a newer version and reduce the amount of refit needed. The costs for marina, your labour and parts are high so rarely will you save money doing a refit. You've done an incredible amount in such a short time. Looking forward to seeing you sailing and finishing the refit.
What a great learning lesson for us all. Your trade handy skills are also very valuable and made this project possible.
What is Sophie getting her Ph.D. in?
You now have a boat that you know inside and out and can take care of any issues that come up. You could spend twice the appraised amount for a fibreglass boat not capable of the NW passage. You have created a true passage maker. Well done both of you.
Why is the inside MIG welded but the outside is TIG welded?
Very nice that you explain to people how much work it really is. God job!
Thanks
Great video looking forward to touring inside and project explains
Really amazing Lumi has been transformed.. Your both amazing people an really big job to tackle… Glad it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor!! Fare winds and following sea's guy's ✌🏼💗😊⛵
I found it very refreshing that this seems to be about a boat refit rather than thinly veiled soft porn with the female wearing a bikini, bending over for the camera at every opportunity. 👏
Juho, otatteko tai saatteko vakuutukset Suomesta?
I am not a boater. Thank you for your honesty.
Dude you are going to be like every other sailor and they are so much better than you. Give it up
Always hard to qualify the final cost of such a project particularly when records are sketchy. Congratulations to you both for 💯 % commitment. I look forward to following, via your vids, to the north-west passage, from New Zealand.
Rename 😳 brave…..
Great Job!!! Congrats
But in your calculations of whether it's financially worth it for a YouTube channel to do all that work, if you consider that most YouTube sailing channels who do refits will be doing weekly videos of the refit and generate revenue from those weekly videos. Perhaps the revenue they make from those videos swings the finances into black.
Great job!
Hi! The two of you can be really proud of what you did make out of her 😉 Wish you good times & happy sailing , with kind regards Cees
Yes, yes yes, and …. Yes
Congratulations on you getting it ready to splash… I knew you could do it…
And I knew it was going to be expensive…. Although I never considered working on my own boat as being work, it's more like labor of love and always enjoyed doing it…
I still think you paid too much for that boat considering the condition it was in and knowing how much time and money it was going to take to get it back in working and livable condition…
The problem I always had my whole life is, when I had the money I didn't have the time, and when I had the time I didn't have the money…..
It's okay to get a fixer upper, but only as long as you don't have to rebuild the whole freaking boat…..
Anyways, good luck..❤️
Glad to hear that you finished the project and wish you all good. Waiting for boat tour!!!
congratulations guys an awesome effort be proud of what you have achieved 👏
Thanks!
Great job. Only 5 months. That is so much work. And are you two still talking to each other? 😂😁😁
