  1. Isn't that the new engine and wasn't it without turbo? You already changed the airfilter…would be strange to have "bad" injector already but not impossible

  2. I'd take a look at the condition of the fuel injectors. Then, move on to the injector system (mechanical or electronic?). But, all diesels will smoke when a sudden heavy load is put on them. Good wishes on your passage to Panama.

  3. Hey Capt. Because your fuel filters are new I wonder about the interliner of the exhaust hose flapping closed under load. Good planning to you .

  4. Diesel engine with new air filter producing black smoke under load: Injector failure. At least one is "hanging" open and lets in too much diesel. That can't be burned and that is causing the smoke. As an experienced sailor you should know what to do.

  5. Hello when you have time. I was wondering if you could let me know what type of sewing machine you would recommend? I have a lot of canvas work and isenglass as boating in Kawartha lakes. I want to do it myself and would greatly appreciate any advice on type of machine to buy. Used of course if I can find one. Thanks much appreciated Tammy

  6. Stuck open injectors take transmission fluid fill half the filter with transmission and the other half diesel fuel put back on engine and start engine and rev engine to 1100 rpm. THIS WILL free up the INJECTORS and LUBE UP TOP END and SET PISTON RINGS ECT. The Black Exhaust Smoke will clear up.

  7. Hello from Ontario, I think you’ve made the right decision and that’s to run from it Rick!
You’re in for a tough few days I’m sure. Keep us informed when you can. Stay safe!
