IM BEEN READING STORYS FEW TIMES NOW , BUT THIS WEEK IN THE SPANISH WATERS I THINK ? THAT SOME SMALL BOATS GETTING ATTACKED BY GREAT WHITE, YOUS HEARD WHAT IM READING ?? SO WATCH TROOPS.. SCO/UK
No word on catching fish? I guess none of them are subscribers. Lousy wifi below.
Another cruiser that I follow , Sailing Project Atticus , is headed the same general direction , about a day behind .
Love the way you sail. So many just turn on their motor just because they are not making 4+ knots.
Why do dolphins always show up around boats?
Hey Dan, I love seeing the old paper chart it's becomming harder and harder to find them. I get the use of square protractors inn a confined space but the ease and speed of using parallel rules makes manual plotting a breeze.
Looked like a beautiful sail!
Get her some Cinnarizine.
Fishing tips: 1) the only book you need on board is Scott Bannerot's "the cruiser's handbook of fishing 2) make your own squid lures ( as per book) 3) best not to use oversized lures for your line ; 4) pelagic fish love some boat speed ( but not over 10 or 12 knots) ❤
About fishing gear on a small sailboat. I found a hand line to be most convenient. Fishing poles get in the way and need to be stowed. I fished with a "Cuban Yoyo" hand line and a yellow lure. Caught mostly Mahi Mahi off the coast of Florida. Never caught a Codfish.
When the wind is weak and the boat is moving at trolling speed fishing helps past the time. When the wind picks up time to pull the line in.
Cuban Yoyo: Rigged with 1/8" braided nylon cord to be easy on the hand, and a few feet of leader.
Clip a leash to your rod, nothing worse than ya rod getting pulled out the holder and disappearing forever.
Hey Dan!
Fishing? Watch this sailing couple's video.
They circumnavigated Australia, and now are doing homesteading.
Lots of knowledge and good advice in here. He's a gentleman know-it-all, eh?
Cheers. 🏴☠️🌏🏴☠️

Free Range Sailing, excellent fishing advice.

Another thought. That guy in charge of the Gibraltar safety school. He's like your biggest fan. No doubt he'd be super jazzed to be invited on a passage. Crewing, and joining your vids.
You should invite him!

Gibraltar is notorious for currents.
I watched one video (therefore I'm an expert!) where it really mattered when, &which section where, you went through, or you have a net loss of progress, even if you are making good surface speed.
They had to depart Morrocco at an optimum time because of currents. (Turns out, Morocco has great Places/Ports for cruisers. As I recall, they next went to the Canary Islands).
Timing, and choice of channel position mattered. Like rivers that have eddys, sometimes Gibraltar nearer a coastline makes a big difference. The current in the middle is strongest.
Submarines
German U-boatsin WW2 trying to sneak by the British defenses into the Med, sometimes had a very difficult time if it. (Surely you've seen the film, "Das Boot"? A classic nail biter!)🌊🌊🌊🌪️⛵🌪️🌊🌊🌊
you have
short choppy waves variable winds and weird currents , welcome to the Med
Just a heads up, you probably haven't caught much because you need two piles out. One to catch their eyes, the second to catch this fish ❤️
Lmfao you guys the squid luer is great for mahi mahi a too and Bonita's which aren't too big and also barracudas fucking love them .
Another good one
you should not bring your halloween and voodoo to christian countries. the problems are big enough.
You guys are still the best. Maya makes a great mate for your crew. The sailing and scenery are wonderful.
Thanks!
What are the regulations in the Med for waste discharge?
Nice episode, thanks!
you need a gaff, and/or long-pole net. Will make allllllllll the difference.
Hola, and welcome to Spain. I guess you guys got overwhelmed by the local attitude here in the Med about fishing. Spanish coastal area is endless mass tourism, and so many sports fishermen here just catch fish for fun not because they need it. I find it a bit odd filming dolphins and admire the magical encounter and then switching right over to how cool it is to fish even if you don´t need any food. It´s a bit of a waste of life for both the fish and the hunters…🥴
I love how you just live according to the whims of nature.
As a former Navy forecaster, which includes both surface and subsurface forecasting, I can tell you that the med is full of currents. For instance the Straight of Gibraltar has a surface current pushing east and a subsurface current going west. Very handy for safe and silent transits through the straight for submarines. Currents are not always formed from tides. Most are caused by horizontal and vertical temperature differentials and wind. The Mediterranean has a large gyre that follows the coast all the way around (slightly cut in half thanks to Italy and Sicily.) The Mediterranean is challenging because Of the fact that every fetch has some sort of current impact on the waves. Cold currents are always found on the west side of continents and warm on the east side. I sailed a little a long time ago in a lake, and in the Navy I was on an Aircraft carrier. Hopefully my information is helpful, I suspect your information meant there are no large scale continental currents like the EAC, California, Gulf Stream, or Kuroshio circulating cold water south and warm north.
Don't forget every lure has a specific tuned speed at which it is to be towed for proper action in the water. This speed will be printed on the box. If your not catching fish then you are either going to fast or too slow. Watch your sonar to ensure there are fish in the area. Good luck!
Hi love your new shipmate and glad to see you back on the water keep moving forward!!! Luv Brent Gordon of Canada.🙂❤🐬⛵
well, welcome to the Med! Possibly the most misunderstood cruising ground in the world 😀 It is not the bathtub many people expect… we had some of the highest waves and fiercest storms in here… but that being said, it is one of the most amazing sailing spots in the world! We will be in Port Camargue in France soon, feel free to swing by and visit 😀
I like where this is going. You could spend a decade just sailing and filming historical sites in Italy alone. There's nothing above Italy imho. Maya's fab.
"There is hardly any swell" – Dan, are we all talking about the same sea??? 😡
I think, you were just lucky. That's not always the situation.
LA VAGABOND ,THOSE GUYS ALWAYS HAVE FISH
THEY JUMP INTO THE OCEAN WITH WETSUIT AND SPEARGUN
AND HUNT THERE FISH
GOTTA BE ABLE TO HOLD YOUR BREATH A LONG TIME
Very small tidal range is great for kayak or zodiac camping on Mediterranean beaches or yachting 🙂
Great video, keep it up 🕊️🇬🇧
Don't forget to visit🇪🇦 Alicante
I want to go! Haha
21:07 I enjoy seeing you use a chart, it more clearly shows your progress (or lack of it) and the geography of where you are then just pointing the camera at the electronic navigation.
Cartagena has Roman and pre-Roman history, it's worth a visit.
Hey! Are u going to spend some time on Mallorca? If so, bottle of Champagne and personal “guide” for yours services)
WOW Sailor, 👍
Eum Dan? You dont need a rod on a sailboat 🙂
Just a spool, like from a kite.
Ive been sailing the med since 2015… Yes it will give you an ass kicking. See you guys in Sardegna? I keep asking… 🤷
be sure to take care of your tackle. stow them away best you can. fish in your anchorages
