  1. Let's nerd out a bit about different rigging here. Focusing on two masted sailing ships here, there are "Ketches" with the aft mast shorter than the mainmast and "Schooners" with the forward schooner mast shorter than the aft mast. Ketches and Schooners can be gaff rigged and usually topsails are flown above gaff sails if the wind blows it and the crew can handle it. However, this doesn't make a Tops'l Schooner out of a Gaff Schooner. A Tops'l Schooner has squared rigged topsails on the forward mast and this makes it a topsail schooner. There is a second rig type with square sails on the forward and gaff sails on the aft mast and this is called a brigantine. The difference is that usually a brigantine flies staysails in between the masts and a tops'l schooner has a gaff sail on the forward mast. Or in other words on a brigantine the square sails are the main driving force and a tops'l schooner is a schooner with additional downwind performance. Jantje is a tops'l schooner with staysails in between the masts and, please correct me if I'm wrong, that's probably the only rig type without a name 🤣 If all of that doesn't make sense at all it's ok! It just means that you'r completely normal.

  2. Jantje with square sails is NOTHING like Coney. So don't try to con us.
You 2 could not handle this vessel on your own. Get real and honest with your subscribers. This deceit is why you have very few patreons.

  3. Totally brilliant. Being at the top of the mast would be an experience. The ship looks beautiful. Flying Coney will be just as beautiful. I will have to look up the distance etc for your trip. Just a bit cooler there than here in Queensland, Australia. The sunset and sunrise looked beautiful. The Evergreen boats are good to avoid. I've heard the practice "touch for parking". 😂 Land? What land? 😂😂

  4. That was I nice, I enjoyed it very much. Barbara, I can't believe you climbed that rigging. Your braver than I am. How many days where you on the ship?

  5. The tugboats I work on , we keep six hour watches when we have two crews. There have been times when getting to sleep for five and a half hours straight was like a vacation. I have found doing 4 on 4 off an unnecessary abuse. With three watches 4 on 8 off works well then everybody is fresh for extra events. Fatigue is a recognize killer especially at sea. The longest I’ve done 6 on 6 off was 98 days . It took a toll on me.

  6. There was no safety harnesses when I was at sea. Even when I was in the construction of tall buildings. It was all free climb and walking the girders. How times have changed 👍👍

  7. Dear Barbara and Daniël,
When your intention is to restore Flying Coney like Jantje is than you really have a tall ship. Jantje is an awesome ship and besides a wheelhouse you’ll be able to make Flying Coney kind of a sister ship of Jantje. Willeke and I love to say that you two aren’t suffering at a lack in guts. Up till now you’re doing so well to make out of Flying Coney a beautiful ship and we only can wish you lots of success with this remarkable project and send you love

  8. Most vessels are very happy with voluntary crew, me included. If you, the reader of this comment, want to go sailing just go to any port and chat with the skippers of boats you would like to join. Doors (or hatches:-) will open!

  9. Another very nice video. Do you already have an idea of what your ship should look like in the end? Do you want to share this image already?😇

  10. It’s good to be reminded of why you are working so hard on Flying Coney. Being ion the sea makes us truly world travelers. The sea is what unites the world.

  11. Maybe I am mistaken, but you did not sail this beautiful boat, I watch every episode of yours but I am really disappointed that you did not sail her.

  12. W0W! What a great trip. You may have paid. However the hands on experience, not mention the first hand knowledge you gained is priceless! Curious as to how much wind would be required. In order to actually consider raising the sail's & turn off the engine or engines? I really enjoyed this episode. I found it very relaxing!! <3 ; )

  13. Once again, quantity does not equal quality. A travelogue with pretend sailing and lots of posing. Not interesting.

  14. Barbara, please stop deceiving your subscribers. Just be honest and we will respect both of you. You are clicking bait, desperate for youtube revenue. Jantje displacement my guess is a minimum of 1.5 times Coney. You have no idea what the line you handled and then looked aloft is for.
Finally, you revealed 3 of the real crew navigating the vessel, which you two have NOTHING to do with. Once again more whining about being tired and cold after a standard 4 hr watch. That's what sailing is all about. Honesty and integrity. Try it, it works.

  15. This video contains the nicest music score I have heard in a long time (among the many channels I review). Great job Sailing Flying Coney!
