  1. Yiu dontbwantba oresent, youbwantba christmas bonus, whatever size it may be. When bosses give gifts its gift cards to stores neither of you use. Inmean, even ten percent over the current check is a gesture.

  2. we got Christmas bonuses from jet owners we took care of moving, servicing, etc their aircraft. some worth 50 mill or so. some had two.

  3. Interesting to learn that working on a boat is a risky matter (Christmas postponed, no regular salary). These things are no gos and will ruin the rep of any employer.

  4. I certainly have had some wonderful gifts. One owner paid 9,000 k for Seattle Ballet school for my daughter. No it was a 1929 classic called MV/ OLYMPUS. it's since changed hands and I'm retired. My daughter is a lawyer in NYC.

  5. I would assume that this is a standard practice. I've seen this in high end restaurants too. The owner does occasionally will give a bonus but it's rare in the restaurant side.
I'd think that it might be more of a compensation payment on ship crew.

  6. I'm guessing when you were in the military you had Christmas 'postponed' 😊 I had 12 consecutive Christmases in the army where I was working, on duty or on call. And that wasn't unusual, and of course being in the military there is no Christmas bonus, no extra pay, leave or any time off in leu. I agree with your comments on Christmas bonuses, better just to be paid fairly and on time.

  7. Both my children (age 30 and 28)work on large sailing yachts. Both are paid a 13th month bonus (dec). Tips anything from 5-10k dollars for a typical 10/12 day charter. Plus many other perks including free flights, healthcare etc etc. they do ok!

  8. We as industry workers are forced to finance their attempt to make yachting affordable. Totally not cool. Most of these owners should be on airplane repo show

  9. I have had the whole gambit of gifts from nothing; to bottles of olive oil that we picked on the Owners' estate and as we aat anchor for the Xmas period I was allowed to bring my gf onboard for 2 weeks and use a guest cabin; one owners gave us shoes from a well known shoe retailer; another gave a combination of leave and/or a bonus; one gave us small bonuses every visit. The longest I have had guests was 5 months non-stop, one family gave bonuses and the other family gave us nothing, but we did get rides in the helo.

  10. I was able to buy 2 homes with just the savings I created for 2 separate owners. The enormous waste that is incurred by (some) Captains and yacht administrators is unfathomable. (pun intended) Yacht budgeting is critical, and raises an interesting eye when being interviewed by owners. I know another Cpt, that went on to run(president) of one of the yacht owners companies. When you are inside of the yacht owners 'trust sphere' , opportunity abounds.

  11. I remember being in the Navy boot camp during Christmas; it was the first time I was away from home on Christmas. But I survived and graduated the next month.

  12. When I worked on ultra large containerships I worked for a German company for a while. Mostly the ships were owned by banks and operated by ship managers who didn’t care much about the crews but I spent 3 years on one very large ship with 24 crew members. That ship was owned by a family of doctors and dentists and was their pension fund. That family requested and received a crew list be emailed to them at every crew change and we all received a very nice birthday present and card on the right day and a nice quality Christmas present and card each. The British ship owners I spent many years with never gave their crew presents, as soon as we were merged with a Dutch company and were then taken over by a Danish company everyone on board received a small but nice Christmas gift, it was really appreciated by everyone spending Christmas onboard. If you were on leave at Christmas then you received an electronic gift voucher for a decent amount of value – usually in excess of £50. British shipowners thought all you deserved was a greetings telegram or email (same one to all the fleet) from the Chairman, that was it!

  13. I ALWAYS provided presents to my crew and staff but through out the year. Every port we visited I paid for a night out for the entire crew permitted by the captain….thats not my call for safety reason. Transport, food and drinks (alcohol within reason). My family and guests were aware and they needed to take care of themselves on that night. My crew turnover rate was almost zero…..except for family emergencies.

  14. Do most owners even know their crew members? or are they anonymous workers like waiters at a restaurant? Do owners actually choose/hire crew or is that all done by the yacht management company that provides a "turn key" yacht that is oprational and staffed to the onwer?
I guess Putin would vet who gets t work on his yachts, but does that mean he would play cards with them or just simpy treat them a robots that serve him?

  15. Just happy to get you normal salary? WTF? The rich fukkers who own those yachts should be paying the crew's salaries like clockwork. You are being treated like slaves.

  16. How do you sail without a sail? That's what I mean about following the errors of others rather than thinking analytically. Never follow the ways of others. Never. Always be completely original. "Think before you speak" is the old adage.

  17. Never follow the ways of others. Always think analytically and contsruct your phrases originally each time, rather than copying the way of others speaking.

  18. I have worked / managed in the hospitality industry for most of my life…year end bonuses are the standard and are usually (in Asia where I am based) MINIMUM 1 month depending on your length of service and is more typically up to several months salary.

Can't even imagine just being happy to get paid a salary….absolutely NUTS!

Although I have heard such stories before….time to find a new yacht (owner) to crew!

  19. We always receive unique and thought-out individual gifts for each crew. It's not expected by any of the crew, but it's nice to feel appreciated during the holidays. 🛥🤙

  20. Not sure if mentioned but there is a clear difference of crew expectations if a yacht is a charter boat, live aboard or non charter non live aboard. Charters the crew normally share a very healthy tip pool at the end of each charter and Christmas would generally be higher than other charters. Some owners will have the chef work at their land side residence to cook Christmas dinner and cover New Year requirements also and the chef is well looked after. Chefs are very under the radar but good ones with a solid reference book from other owners are paid very well and looked after. Rotations, this is time onboard vs time off and whether paid time off is a really big factor for crew of any discipline, but of course anyone holding a Deck/Eng/ETO CoC have to have relevant amounts of seatime with relevant voyages to maintain their licences this is a really really crucial point right now as that time onboard must be verified and proven, which some in the industry are struggling with right now because of their own choices……
