Hmm, to be honest I'm extremely cautious of Leopard catamarans, to say they have had bad press over the last few years is a massive understatement.
Ignoring that, 1600w solar is no where near enough, seriously. Unless it's a plug and play boat as in keep in plugged in to mains power to charge overnight and only ever use it for day sailing and an occasional weekend break, then it's fine.
As a cruiser, well it's just not. You'd have your generator on every day for hours on end and when it breaks down, which they often do, you'd be royally screwed.
As a coastal day sailer its ok, the electric side of it is more of a novelty than an actual solution, hense the full size fuel tanks, there's a hint LOL.
It's all about the comfort…. No mention of actual quality or lack of, construction methods, or sailing ability!! But having batteries in the stern and a massive genset 2m. from the bow would suggest weight placement was not a priority. This boat will make a great charter/party boat but definitely dangerous for blue water sailing…. Leopard have a massive amount of work to do it they want to rebuild their shattered reputation. They need to start with better design and quality control during construction.
I just watched the Dominican video. Great job of going the extra mile of capturing the local life and culture.
Suggestion: you two would be postal children for the language apps such as Babel similar . I am sure they would be interested in sponsorship if you guys were serious about learning Spanish or another language. The are other language apps that would work with you as well if Babel was not interested
Hey quick question isn’t it bad for saltwater and battery’s 🔋 to mix ?
Leopard is getting so much great press lately with these electric boats! See you in Annapolis! 🙂
Ditch the fly bridge .. add solar over the whole roof ..get the mainsail boom down lower . The stairway next to the sink washer seems to be tempting an accident.
Hi all… May I ask, how easy/challenging would this catamaran operate single handedly? i love the Leopard style and the 46 is a very spiritual number for me so I was attracted to this video. Thank you. I wish you many years of sailing. 🙏
Great open house tour. You two are amazing and btw, I am loving my new Adventure Crews Tumbler!
She looks good guys. Have a great time at Annapolis 🎉
Tesla needs to get involved in Sail boats or should I just say boats
❤ baguio😊
Hii it’s the kid u have merch to when u came to get Dixie it was so nice meeting u and I LOVE ur channel!
was hoping to see some solar panels, wind turbine maybe and why not some hydro turbines as well!!
Great video, asking the question how you can you evaluate an ocean-going sailboat when you have not crossed an ocean? Island hopping to Grenada is not the same as sailing to the Azores, respectfully suggesting you get some more sea time before selling yourselves as ocean-yacht evaluators.
Oh my god get your face out of the shot and show me the boat!
I watch sailing channels on and off. In catching up to you guys, I was pleasantly surprised to see this video on Leopard's hybrid electric boat!
I think it's great that travel in general is not only thinking electric but building crafts and vehicles as well.
Because these vehicles are large and battery design and capacity are improving for large vehicles, it's understandable they are doing hybrid electric now.
Electrification is a long-term challenge. While we're still in the early stages, these are exciting developments when large manufacturers in the travel space (whether boats, RVs, vans, etc) are putting money into development.
Great video guys. I'll wait to see if you and/or others have more on electric boats from Annapolis. I wonder how many there will be out there.
P.S. Loved your Beryl Grenada hurricane work! Thanks for doing it!
tiens un bon commercial qui connait son job !
Leopard = expensive way to make sailing dangerous
“True sailors” say “AT anchor” not “on anchor”. However, after getting in that little dig, I give you guys props for jumping in with both feet. That last question in your Q&A, was the key question for any boat owner, who doesn’t want to hear a generator at night while sleeping in the tropics with your AC running. On any boat, multihull or monohull, of any kind of propulsion, the key question is, can I run my AC all night on battery in the tropics?.
Reacher as let himself go a bit
GOD you do go on and on and on with adjectives as it is going to make the boat better
The port hole podcast is a great idea. I would love to listen.
A giant electrical hazard.
See you in Annapolis in the spring of 25'
Great to see these boats powered by wind diesel electric-solar. 💯👌🏼👍🏼🙏🏼
Love to see how the electric works out. Its exactly what I am going to do when I buy my offshore cat.
Definitely not for me, I'm 6'3" 😂
With the greatest respect, I was more interested in images of the boat rather than images of yourselves.
You are such a nice couple. 🥰 Btw: The cat is super, but much to less Solar.
Hi, fascinating to see the 46 and fan of hybrid but personally would rather a direct linked diesel to propellor with electric in series so if all else fails you might have some propulsion. The chances of serial failures are admittedly small but a lightning strike would definitely cripple you. On the plus side podded motors reduce need for sail drive maintenance and annual docking so a big win. Layout really loved the 3 cabin arrangement with space forward for office or workshop although does bring head closer to sleeping area. :-0 Only step backwards is the loft stairs are not on same side as helm as per the 45. This makes no sense to me as would want to easily move from one to another rather than have to transit across the rear seating. Also noted R&C have done nothing, seemingly, to improve support for rudder post. If I had money to buy first step I’d take would be to add some supporting GRP.
We just purchased a 46. It’s going into the charter program for the next five years. When it comes out one of the big things I wanna do is change starboard forward cabin into more of a toy garage. Dive gear snorkel gear stuff like that when we’re not using it. Leave the shower in place and use it to freshwater wash all our gear and then add a dedicated dehumidifier into that room to help dry things out. Remove the bed remove the cabinets underneath. We’ve everything else pretty much standard except for the model we got is the four cabin so port forward is not an office Space. We’re also gonna add a combo washer dryer to the starboard forward cabin as well. The other big thing I’m doing is adding a furling boom, four-way thrusters. I’m gonna add an arch off the back of the boat for additional solar. And eventually convert the diesel to a diesel electric hybrid. The problem with the current hybrid model is range. Ironically going diesel through a generator into an electric motor is actually far less efficient than using a diesel for your long range and an electric for your short range.
Was there a boat in this video? Sorry, I was distracted.
Feedback:
Helm seating: I'd suggest changing it to a split-bench design, with each section electric-adjustable (similar to most cars, today.) To include height, forward/backward, and recline adjustments. Tip: When you are on a LONG day at the helm – you do NOT want to be standing all day/night. Instead, you want a seat position where your feet/toes are grasping/steering the bottom of the wheel (like a foot-rest.) This keeps your hands free for drinks, comms, binoculars, etc.
Kitchen sink: Needs to be at least a double-bin (double-drain) sink. Also needs one of the arched/sprung faucets that you can pull out like a showerhead, and better rinse-down the sink.
I would ask to have a grab bar around ALL of the kitchen counters. Diameter thick enough to be sturdy, yet thin enough to clasp a safety belt onto.
Nav station: I would install a Plexiglas top over thr top, and secure it with a long piano hinge. This would allow you to put charts beneath it, and write on the plexiglass with dry-erase markers or grease pencils. It would protect your charts from spills/drinks, and keep them from flying off during windy conditions.
Showers: I couldn't really tell from this video. But, all showers should either have a moulded seat, or a flip-down seat (so ladies can easily sit and shave their legs.)
I personally also prefer the shower floor to be recessed a few inches (aka shower pan design) = reduce water seepage outside the shower.
