Any boat is capable of crossing oceans but is it comfortable, doesn't pound into a seaway, track well up and downwind, do you have to reduce sails quickly or got a knock down…will the prop or rudders catch lines or seaweed and some can be easily overloaded with gear and food to make a safe crossing

Sounds like the Jeanneau is the winner.
the 36 and the older 35 are the top of my list for vessels (for a couple or maybe with a baby if we have one by the time, we are currently living in a studio so we got used to the small space), I hope I can get one of these in 3-4 years…. a 349 or a Bavaria cruiser 34 would be nice as well but they won't fit in my price rage… or will they? nobody knows yet.

Nice in-depth review. The mainsail trim discussion is something that has been on my mind for a while looking at these boats. So, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 or 419 eliminates that issue and the newest Beneteau models have both main and genoa lines run back to the dual helms. It seems they realized having the mainsheet on the cabin top wasn't all that great for solo sailing.

Chris I was expecting a little more drama music, maybe an orchestra playing something hair raising. HAHA Normally I would lean to the Benetaeu but here I would have to take the Jennaeu. They both seem like great boats but I always want the most bang from my buck. thanks again

You mentioned alternatives to the comfort ratios and capsize rating, where can I read more about their superior alternatives?
Between these 2 boats, The beneteau would fit my needs better the the Jeanneau. I personally do not like either of these boats sailing characteristics due to not being able to drop the sails from the cock pit.
I agree with you i like the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey much better and they offer better keel versions in the larger models. Seems the engineers went the extra mile with designing the keels. I wonder the pointing ability with the lifting keel so i would probably go with the shole keel. Still i can't go any taller than 60 foot tall mast from the waterline.
Comparisons are really helpful. I like the J better too.
