  1. FYI they’re called paragliders and they are considered the safest form of flight in the way of ultralight aircraft because you’re basically constantly on a parachute which is your wing. You can have motorized or non-motorized but they’re just too open for me and I have too much of a fear of heights. I need to be inside an aircraft.

  2. It's exciting to see innovation and creativity while it's happening. I can't wait to see what happens with this. Even if it's a total failure, it's a success.

  3. Wow, he's using CATIA on that laptop for his CAD software. That's a serious piece of software, pretty hard to get a license for that, impressive. Up to around $50,000 for a license with approx $10,000/year fee.

  4. And Ill say it again… Hike n Fly paragliding. Go do a course. PPG is fun, but its very expensive and you need to store the motor somewhere. You guys love to climb and hike. Small, lightweight paragliders which essentially get you down from the mountain. Perfect for you two. You even get Hybrid tandems.

  5. Given basically rectangular solar cells, it is bound to be inefficient if you use triangular shapes to mount them. Why are you going triangular? Look at the folding shapes of game boards: use some of those. Rectangular, like your solar cells. Sorry, guys, this is crap design.

  6. Nice CAD user 'frame design' idea …but perhaps 'cosmetic' or "a solution looking for a problem"?. Why the need to be portable? – Why the need to fold or take down after deployment… adding much cost before deployment? What utility if normal fixed frames and connectors are much cheaper and robust. Many might practically and budget wise just buy what's needed, and go with it…? Fun Thor Heyerdal social vid though.

  7. Several sailors have YouTube videos describing their ways to add solar panels. I am sure Dan and Kika have checked them out. Depending on headroom in the cockpit (how tall is Dan?), several 100W panels could be installed just below the boom and over the dodger (not under the boom for obvious reasons). I guess this would add not less than 400W to the array. I agree that using the railings also makes sense, even adding stainless steel tubes forward. This would allow 2 X 100W on each side, perhaps even three. Combined this would add 800W inputs or more. I would simply look into 100W panels and attach them to the railing with a simple mechanism to raise them to a horizontal level when needed. When the panels are let down (when underway) you even can "hide" them with a cloth. You could repeat this on the stern with possibly room for 2 X 50W panels (I think there is insufficient room for 100 W panels there given the autopilot. The idea would be to make the panels easily available. If the intent is to remove the panels while underway, then the issue becomes one of storage. On passages, the forward berth is typically not used, so storing 4 X 100 W panels is basically 70cm X 105cm X20cm. That footprint is not all that large, compared to the folded solution which indeed has a lot of movable parts and still needs 30 X 30cm storage.
