I thought i did a great job parking it back in Carrick marina until i was told the next day i docked in the wrong birth. hahah

For a first time I was seriously impressed. Not many boats do what they are supposed to going astern. It might be worth having a quick burst of power to get moving fast enough for steerage, then put it in neutral to get rid of the prop wash. It will still be tricky, but maybe less so. Bring on the next video.
Totally empathise with you on your first experience! It was the same for me too. You have third party insurance, right? In the worst case scenario you scratch other boats in the marina. It calms me down remember I'm covered on that. Anyway I think you've done a great job

Great first try!
I had a finesse 24 which is a long keel, with a lifting daggerboard. Don't be afraid to use neutral, and drift in, you will still have rudder authority when going forward, just knock it into forward and back to neutral if you need a bit of speed or extra rudder authority.
to get the back to go where you want it to go when going backwards, again using short bursts of forward with rudder on in the direction you want the back to go really helps without slowing the boat down going in reverse.

The Contessa is not the easiest in reverse, prop wash like you said. So good job, everything was under control, think of it like driving a limo, turns in its own time and you always need more room than you think.Control and not gunning all the time it is the key. Your boat originally would have had a 2 stroke petrol with no gear box so you would have to turn the engine of to change into reverse and the engine literally spins in the other direction. So be thankful for small mercies.
Steering a boat has always been totally foreign to me. Looks like you had a pretty good first trial. 👌😃

Another great video, just wondering if you have marked the new anchor chain with anything so you know how much scope you have in the water. Cheap markers are brightly coloured tie wraps every 5 or 10 metres, keep up the videos. We did the same as you 2 years ago buying a 44 ft cutter rigged steel ketch on the river Crouch at Fambridge and sailed/ motored right round to Glasson Dock just above where you are heading. A comment from New Zealand. I have a Maurice Griffiths Golden Hind 31. Long keel, same issues as you going astern. I do a lot of lining up the stern where I want to go by going ahead then reversing until she goes off and then line up again in forward, kicking the stern around like you did with quick blasts of throttle pushing the prop wash off the rudder. Another tip for single handed docking is to tie your for and aft docking lines together with a reef knot making sure you have run them outside all your rigging, stanchions etc. When you jump off you can control the bow and the stern and if there is a handy mid cleat in the slip you can tie off to that first (like a spring line) and prevent any over run into the end of the slip. I find it works much better than a mid cleat on the boat. The reef knot is do you can separate the lines quickly. Love your channel!
Bravo. I am a great fan of pushing boats to get going, esp when on your own, with right hand prop and that wind blowing on the port bow. You get to hold onto the bow till the last moment – but have to get aboard smartish at the last moment. Saves bumping into the boat next door. A nice reminder for me, for the new season. Bravo again.

great job steering for the first time has you have now found out yachts dont go backwards well but im shock the boat does not have an anemometer fitted where wind speed and direction at a glance makes sense think of going to Mousehole or penance and not Falmouth

Hey fun to see another newbie on the water and not just seasoned veterans. I have an Albin Vega 27 that is also known for its difficult maneuvering and recognize the nervousness about windy weather in the harbor, despite it being a sailboat supposed to enjoy wind. My first longer trip, the engine failed, I was alone in the boat and had to teach myself how to get the sails up and how to get to a dock without engine. Somehow I survived that too and not a scratch on the boat. But I would recommend learning how to sail before going out further from the harbor. 😅
That’s most impressive. My early attempts at departure or docking in the wind had me hitting something hard. The first time under wind power, I went into a concrete peer with horrible scraping noises 😢. the second the wind was too strong for my electric trolling motor and I had little control. Thanks for sharing. Fair winds!

Two bits of advice I've heard:
Never approach the dock faster than you would want to hit it.
Go slow like a pro, not fast like an ass.
That was probably the second most butt-pucking experience you had as a new boat owner. Think of the other boats as expensive pinatas, but you, or your ins. company, has to pay when you break them open.
I had a Sadler 25 got it cheap, fell into two months of debt at the marina for mooring, went down to pay it off and they wanted the equivalent of five months rent, didn't have it and they took my boat, she was a beauty just needed a bit of attention as all old boats do…still upset about it..
"No rush" – that's right attitude!

That was a bloody impressive first docking. When I first had my boat (20') I spent 2 days doodling about on board, pretending to myself that I was doing jobs & "getting used to the boat". But really I was just plucking up the courage to motor out of my berth. Great videos.
Long keeled boats can be a total sod going astern….it's do with the shape the rudder and keel makes which can 'suck' the boat the wrong way. The best trick I ever learned when working solo, which is most of the time, is to set up a line from the middle of the boat with a loop on the end and the tail going to a cockpit winch. You probably worked that out by now but i'm a bit late to the party here .
