  1. I love my snubber too. I find using the claw type chain grabber better than the slot hook type which tend to jump off in certain conditions. AIS tells me you are well advanced on the south coast now so hope its better Sailing😊. Best

  2. Nice explanation of your anchoring. I'm a solo sailor and it's pretty much the same. Know the depth, motor up, engine in neutral, go forward before the boat comes to a halt. Drop anchor until it hits bottom plus a metre or two of chain. Then I wait for the wind to take the bow and as it does so I can see the chain start to pull. Now I start paying out chain and the movement of the boat lays it on the sea bed rather than piling it on the anchor. Once I've let enough out I stop and just let nature takes it's course. The chain will tighten, the anchor digs in and the bow gets pulled to wind. My snubber is a bridle with a slot type chain hook. The only time the hook has come off is when the bridle is too long and the hook lays on the sea bed taking the tension off.

  3. Sound anchoring advice. I smiled as you were mentioning taking transits, as the boat and pier behind you moved from left to right to left… showing how much you were moving and how difficult it would be to visibly line up a couple of stationary targets.

  5. Ahh anchoring in heavy wind is always tricky. I remember a few years ago I was on my friends boat and we were anchored on the South coast of Martinique, sitting out the "December winds" two weeks of 35 knots gusting into the 45's. The anchor was set and holding great the boat didn't move, however a big 60ft catamaran hadn't put out enough scope so it started dragging towards us fast. Luckily I was on deck doing some polishing so I saw it coming our way. I yelled "Cat dragging towards us". The captain started the engine and I took off the snubber and quickly pulled up the anchor. By us moving out of the way the cat barley missed us, I'm talking centimetres! Then we had to reanchor in those heavy wind conditions, it took us several tries because the wind would take the bow almost immediately. We finally after 3 or 4 attempts got the hook set and I put out almost all chain we had and we were almost back to our old spot. We didn't drag at all that week however several other boats did.
