The sea is really lawless.
While his story is compelling, it's also very sad. There's a certain age when people realize they should stop sailing and Magnus was about 10 years past that date. Broke, old, subpar health/hygiene, and sailing dangerously is no longer something to envy.

What a sailor. To the status quo, his “lack” of the latest amenities might stand out. To those with the sea in their souls, Magnus’ love of traditional sailing makes him sage. He was a sailor’s sailor. We had much to learn from his priorities and fearless dismissal of approval. The humble man is the strong man.
