I'd replace that whole saildrive guys. Get a whole new SD60 (i think it's sd60 from the looks). They come as one complete unit or upper/lower. I'd get the complete unit, which comes COMPLETELY assembled (even with oil). You just bolt it in. I'd be there for the install, as nobody EVER reads the damn manual. It's easier than it sounds, but you normally have to drop it in from above. Meaning possibly sliding the engine out of the way. When I found a competent crew to do this, they had it ENTIRELY done within 2 days (and they did both of ours)
Also, say hi to Brent and Ana on Cat Impi. South African couple, been sailing for decades. Been all over the world. Endless knowledge. Lovely people. They've helped us immensely. Also, his cousin owns Just Cats, just sayin' 😉
The two people in the cockpit should have told the truth…..THEY LIED!!!!!!! If it is the same guy from 2019 that operates the Lift, he is an asshole…..Usually he has his hand out….He works for Harbour town and not Just Cats
Sea Tow blocked your email after making the damage claim? And those two captains towing the boat lied about hitting your catamaran? How many more people were in the same situation without having the luck of high-resolution security footage? And that's probably why they block people who make damage claims by default because most of the time there's no prove. What a bunch of scumbags. And by the way, the guy on the lift not speaking a word of English and not feeling obligated to call over a colleague to translate what the boat owner just told him waving a folder full of schematics is just infuriating. Doing a good job while ignoring the owner is rude and arrogant. But at least you get the job done as it should be. But ignoring the owner and messing it up, is a punchable offense. Good on you showing restraint.
What a week, a week to forget ….. luckily it gets take care of and your smile is back!! Just book it all in the “folder” lessons learned!!
I'm very happy that everything is getting fixed and you're being taken care of.,… Be careful the shaft on the sail drive could be bent
If that was my boat, my wife would probably need to bail me out of jail. Sorry that happened.
Thanks for coming through with a video, keeping us informed after this tough week when you lost even your footage. All these setbacks no fault of your own; No Fault being a license, it seems, for reckless people to be reckless. I have the feelings you can imagine! It appears that at least you'll get some compensation. But already on a tight schedule against the impending hurricane season and this persistent storm system, which thankfully ends today I think. Big Lost is back. Stay strong, keep the dream alive.
3 strikes…Yahweh don't want you to have that boat.
I'm so sorry for all the hassle and heartbreak. You guys are handling it like champions and are getting through it. Soon it will be a memory and one you won't have to keep reliving or looking back on. Bright beautiful days ahead! Stay strong in each other and know we are praying for your success! Big hugs from landlocked Idaho❤
Oh man, hang in there guys. From the video, it looked like the collision was more the fault of the yellow tugboats. How does responsibility work in that case?
The guy running the lift that didn't speak English was probably an illegal. You could call ICE and have that guy deported. Just saying.
You guys are up against it. Your pals are in the ABCs. Which is where you want to be, but you’re stuck in a Florida shipyard with the clock ticking (18 days until the beginning of the hurricane season) with serious damage to your boat. You totally want your vessel to be in perfect shape to make that big crossing. Your kids are probably getting really restless. Yikes. That’s rough!
If the repairs take longer and longer, fighting you every minute, you might have to rethink. Go in December. That works. Put the boat in a very good ’on the hard’ type hurricane hole, and summer in the Sawtooths.
But, if the repairs all go together quickly , and 10 days from now you’re leaving Freeport , yahoo! The sea gods smiled, and you’re making the run of your life.
(I vote for that one 😂 !)
Hang in there. When things are bad and you get through it. The sun is always brighter on the other side.
I enjoy following your families adventure! For piece of mind, I would hire an independent surveyor to check the insides of the saildrive, saildrive mount, and bellows, bell housing for cracks or damage, and engine mounts. You are semi-retired, slow down, hurricane season or not. Cruising is changing plans constantly (We left the US in 2022 and are now in Thailand, not the original plan), go with the flow. If you want something bad, that is exactly how you will get it.
Sounds like God is trying to warn you of something
I love how you always keep it real, don't always edit out an unhappy moment! Lying is one thing I hate, it is soooo hard to stomach when it is happening right in front of your face like that… It's so easy and yet so difficult to just say sorry but it is a good reminder for when it is my turn to just say sorry. I am hoping that this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise in many ways, getting things already done and checked off the boat repair list is always a good thing. Keep at it and enjoy your new home, she looks like an absolute beauty!
Man. Rough beginnings. Hope things smooth out.
WOW! Thats a horror story! I think you handled it amazingly well given the situation. Probably a reflection on your business owning experience? Its really beyond belief that a travel lift operator would not know how critical sling placement is with catamarans in particular. Hopefully its just the shaft thats broken which is an easy fix, but definitely need a good mechanic to check it out fully. Its always a bugger to have your plans thrown out, but as you are discovering its a frequent thing with the cruising life! Main thing is to try to avoid letting deadlines affect your decision making around cruising. Good luck with all the work and getting on with cruising ASAP!
That really does sound like a tough week. So nice the marina are sorting it, I am not sure I would have kept my cool with the travel lift guy like Coner did. Even with an SD card down you put together a good video, let hope you don't get hit in the yard too.
