  1. Your dad must have been truly amazing, he raised a truly amazing son.
I’m mesmerized by the cutting of the planks! I’m a nurse, so I’ve never seen woodworking in detail. It’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing this build with us!

  2. Condolences to you and your family. Losing a parent is difficult. It took 2 years for me to look at photos of my father after his passing. You did the right thing in terminating Ran II's voyage. Time is the most precious gift. I built a small cedar strip row boat with my father in his latter years. Best time ever spent. I am watching your build with very keen interest.

  3. I have been following along for quite some time, and I have noticed your skills hiding out just under the surface of all of the smaller boat projects over the years, now I'm seeing what you're capable of, and it's truly impressive. I'm sorry about your father's passing I hope being home helps you and your family heal from the loss.

  4. Regarding the epoxy cleaning, the more significant benefit is quality control of the fairing process – the hardness differential between the wood and the glue creates a greater potential for hollows and flat spots when there's a lot of hard material that needs to be removed.

  5. I'm pondering if it is necessary to glue the strips into long scarfed planks before attaching to the mold.

Since you are scarfing the end of the plank and screwing it to the previous plank….can you simply attach a short plank..secure it…then glue the scarf as you install the next plank in the row.

Seems like you could clamp the scarf with some waxed paper until it dries and save the step of the making a single long plank

  6. I have a suggestion for lifting the planks over the keel. You could fashion a “Y” shape peace of timber and attach it to a long handle so when one end is over the keel the other person can lower the other end gently down putting less pressure on the joins.
Just a thought, what are you going to do with the frames inside the hull when the hull is finished? Maybe you could sell them to someone who is going the build one themselves.
I do enjoy watching the building process.

  7. With a view like that out the shop window I'm not sure how much work I would get done.
That is some really nice cedar from old growth logs. I'm not sure you could buy from a sawmill today anything of that quality.

  8. Thanks for the video folks. What a great idea about the epoxy bag trick. Very sad to hear about your father, but seeing Vera playing shows us that life goes on and everyone plays a part. It makes family life seem all the more precious.

  9. I 'm a retired cabinet maker, and I used a biscuit cutter instead of dowels it's quick, and the biscuit swells when you use pva glue. I have used it on a boat, and it is still sailing . LOVE YOUR CHANNEL

  10. Its so hard loosing a parent, the person that has been your base for so many years! I just lost my mom yesterday and it is absolutely gut wrenching now that both parents are gone! Like you said… I'm desperately trying to keep my mind busy!

  11. By my thinking, you are building a fiberglass boat that uses a wood core. My fiberglass boat uses a wood core for the deck and housetop, and a foam core for the hull. BTW: Great progress building the core of RAN III.

  12. If you reposition the strips such that the joints align during glue up could use one bar clamp to apply pressure across the stack. Just put some spacers wrapped in plastic between them to prevent squeeze out attaching all the planks together. Gluing up several planks like this at a time would also make it possible to see how your joints are spacing out.

  13. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible journey in this boat build. Made me think about my dad who is still alive and how I should cherish every moment I have with him. I wish you and your family a lot of happiness from my family to yours. Condolences ❤

  14. Great so far! Thinking a bit different, could you attach lines inside the frames with lead weights to go over the strips to pull down and in and eliminate all the drilling and screws?

  15. I’m so glad you’re sharing this project with us. It can’t have been easy for you and so sorry about your father, you always put on a brave face and optimistic approach. It does get easier, time is a healer. The boat is certainly taking shape now, it will be so worth all the hard work you’ve put in and especially for Vera, with her sweeping up!

  16. Condolences to you for your loss. Well worth cleaning the epoxy off when it's wet, especially inside as I have found that with the cedar being soft compared to epoxy you can make hollow areas around a lump of epoxy especially when sanding, it has to be planned off rather than sanded. Fantastic build project.

  17. Hello Marlin and Johan. I've Seen all of jour videos and I'm a big fan. I recently got old episodes from Costa Rica to Hawaii and Alaska. I think RAN the Beason 40 was a great seagoing vessel. So i look in the internet. In found her for sale, her new Name is LAZULT. The läßt owner let the ship totally run down. I Was very sad. You Malin and Johan took always Google care of her. Johan, you are doing a great Job on the New project. Best whishes Form Germany Michael 👍 Custom 40 Beason sloop 1987 for sale San Diego in found RAN in the net

  18. My condolences to you & your family. I can relate as I lost my dear father in July 2022, and miss him so much. As others have said, he helped raise a wonderful son. I’m sure he loved you beyond words and was so proud of you. Do take care and your work on the new boat is really impressive.

  19. My experience, clean the planks as you go.
Cured epoxy is hard, and leaves awkward divots in the wood if you have to carve it off.
For your slipping scarfe joints. Try making a "sleeve " out of plywood scraps, that you can slide over the ends. It stops one leading edge going too far "in" when you slide the two wedges together .

  20. Sorry about your father. Big hugs to you.
Have you done a mass test on the strip planking to see if it’s in-line with the weight planned for? First impressions for me it seems planking was thicker than I thought needed if going to be glassed both sides (not knowing how thick you going to glass)

    Awesome to watch this process.
