Dezastru GRAVE | Etapa 4 28/04 | Spectacolul Ocean Race

1. You could fly the mast to Rio in a 747 freighter really expensive but doable. I’ve worked with them for 43 years and loaded much more difficult stuff than a carbon fibre mast give Cargolux a call.

  2. One way to make that swivel break for sure is to overdo backstay tensioning. Most likely hydraulic, the force it can generate is endless. Going upwind, you need to find the balance between reducing forestay sag so you can point higher and accidentally breaking the forestay.

  3. Are other boats having to keep J0 or J3 as additional forestays?

I can imagine how nerve racking it may be not fully trusting your mast when the going gets tough again.

  4. You can hear the genuine sadness in all the crews and the goodwill towards Kevn and his crew. Lady luck can be a b@tch sometimes and it was PRB’s turn. I am just thankful they are skilled as sailors to deal with such dangerous situations and come up with a plan B. Stay safe and fairwinds. Greg 🇬🇧

  5. We had no idea that Paul has been sick? This race is certainly taking the health from these brave sailors. Hopefully he and Nico will recover soon and not effect the end result. Thank you so much for sharing this epic race.

  6. It is not a race around the world if a boat can retire from a leg and still go on to win. The manager says they havent retired but in the real world, putting on the engine is a retiral.

  7. While I'm a Team Malizia fan, no one wants to hear of such a tragedy as has befallen Team Holcim PRB. They have been fierce competitors and leaders throughout most of this race. I am deeply sorry to see that this has happened to them. I surely hope that they can rejoin the race at Newport – but that is a logistical nightmare to accomplish. I wish them well.

  8. I believe Kevin Escoffier and his team (on and off the boat) will accomplish getting back in the race and to Newport for a point AND to start Leg 5! Having watched Escoffier and Jean Le Cam after the rescue, etc. … and all of the videos in TOR … Kevin Escoffier is an accomplished and yet humble and realistic leader. I expect that the entire team fits with his mission. Just like with Guyot, it is absolutely heartbreaking. I think all teams hope for a 5 IMOCA race … I certainly do as a spectator!

Thanks to Niall and TOR team for this show … a lot explained. I did have to Google "Pan pan" 🙂

  9. Good explanation of the most likely suspect for causing the dismasting. Since all the teams are using the same J2 mast fitting, can we assume the other teams will be heading up their masts to take another look as soon as possible?

  10. I hope they get the new rigg as soon as possible to Rio to be able to complete the leg in time, but I still wonder why they didn't go 40nm north to Vitória instead of 200nm down to Rio. Still waiting for an explanation. Independently I wish them good luck for a swift repair and a safe journey to Newport.

  11. These interviews were so staged. All their cute comments yet everybody knows if Holcim would finish the race no one else had a chance . So all 4 boats are yippey ka yeah , let's race and kick the heck out of Holcim. I like it . cheeeerio

  12. Bad design. It failed so others will. Do the other boats continue racing or is there a recall to check the swivel connection? Who is responsible for knowing there is an issue? Now all the crews are sailing knowing it can happen any time to them.

  13. Qualifying of drama the start of leg 4, would be an understatement. Injuries, mast… T__T
Does Team Malizia made having a bruised up team mate mandatory?

  14. Concerning masts of FRP: Kevlar is a very tough fiber, and it was "alloyed" with carbon fiber weave in the Ferrari F40.
I marvel that this is not used to better effect on masts. Aluminum-mast dismasting is a rear thing.
    Rigidity ain't everything.

  15. Heartbreaking to see this happen to Holcim and impressive to see how their team handles this test. I know they will be back in the race as they are fierce competitors! Go Holcim! My question : what are the design features that determine this class of boats for this race? Rosie commented on how all boats have the same mast yet the hull designs are very different? Who decides what must be "standard design" for each competitor and what can be open for modification? I'm a marine biologist and not really a sailor but the technical aspects of these boats is fascinating. Thank you for clarifying these technical details as I enjoy this adventure from terra firma!

  16. This brings back memories of when Puma lost the upper 2/3 of their mast in the middle of the South Atlantic, where there was no place nearby to go. Even motoring was a challenge, due to the extreme distance involved in reaching the nearest land. A passing freighter donated enough diesel to allow the boat to reach an island where they waited for a pick up by a freighter. The crew were able to use the stump of the mast to fly a small amount of sail, but only could manage 2-3 knots. This case the mast snapped right at the base, so there was no stump.

  17. Is it just me or do these Imoca boats break easier than the VO65’s?

Are there any comparative metrics about the conditions at the time all the breakages so far this edition compared to the breakages from previous editions?

So glad everyone is safe! Hate it for Kevin E and crew. Plenty of racing left to maintain/recover points!

  18. Please clean up your choice of language. It's a boat race. It's not INCREDIBLY difficult. DISASTER hasn't struck. Please, tone down the adjectives. "BRUTAL SCENES" belong to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Not in a boat race. Less drama, more sailing news. Please. Thank you.
